I'm pleased to announce that Jason Parent has graciously accepted our request to read his latest offering, Wrathbone with us. Jason will also be lowering the price on Amazon to $ 0.99 from 6/25 - 7/1. Last, but certainly not least, Jason is offering two signed/personalized editions of Wrathbone to two lucky winners that post an honest review on Goodreads and on Amazon. You can purchase Wrathbone here:

Without further ado, please help me welcome Jason Parent!

Jason Parent | 741 comments Hello, everyone! I'm honored to have my book included as an HA Group Read. I'm happy to answer any questions you have. This collection has, hopefully, a story for every horror fan. Wrathbone is historical fiction, but from there, you may find a more Tales from the Crypt-type vibe (a show I loved growing up, so I'm sure it has forever influenced me).

I'm in!

Matt | 11 comments Can't wait for this one!

Char | 17457 comments Hello and welcome, Jason!

Vicki Willis Thanks for doing this Jason! I haven't read anything by you before and am looking forward.

Jason Parent | 741 comments Hello Ken, Troy, David, Latasha, Kimberly, Matt, Charlene and Vicki. Thank you for joining! For those of you who haven't read my work, I hope you find Wrathbone a pleasant surprise. For those who have, thanks for your support and coming back around for more.

While I hope to win you all over, please don't feel like you have to hold back on your critique or criticism just because I'm here. I value your opinions whatever they may be. Also, please feel free to ask me anything you'd like, anytime.

Dia de los Muertos - one of my best stories and definitely the best of my 3 Bad Apples stories. Those guys are fantastic people to work with and talented writers, and we added a story by one of horror's bests that year with Mr. Burke. His tale, I thought anyway, was Shirley Jackson-esque.

Kimberly (kimberly_3238) | 7707 comments Mod
Dia de los Muertos was my favorite in the collection--enough research to make it "real", and one hell of an ending!

message 14: by Jason (new) - added it

Jason Parent | 741 comments Thanks, Kimberly. A lot of research was needed for that story, from Afghan terrain to military procedure to the Dia de Los Muertos celebration.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11974 comments Mod
Ok I'm going to call in sick the rest of the week and devour the rest of the book like it's Halloween candy! Lol well... I wish I could!! 😜

Jason, I love the cover for Wrathbone. It has such an eerie, haunting quality. What can you tell us about the cover and how it came to be?

When Randy and Cheryl from Comet Press and I were discussing covers, we all agreed we wanted Lincoln or something easily recognizable as having to do with Lincoln, but haunting and worthy of a horror collection cover. The Comet team took it from there and deserve all the credit... well them and our 16th President for almost looking haunted in some of his portraits without any ghastly treatment. I love the feeling I get just looking at that cover and (unlike some of my other covers) couldn't be happier with it.

Yes, my apologies - for people that bought this book during a certain window, there was some mix up between my publisher and Amazon that has since been fixed, whereby people were only getting the novella Wrathbone. An update should be available (or available shortly from Amazon). So, you can do one of three things:

1. PM me with your email and I will send you a copy. Your email will not be used or saved for any other means;

2. Try updating via Amazon by using the steps described at the below link:

https://www.dangerandplay.com/2017/03...

3. Though I am not sure this will work, it makes sense - return the book, then re-purchase it?

I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience anyone may be experiencing. I wonder if other authors have unnecessary hiccups like this. For those of you who this has happened to, please let me knw even if you do resolve it through either step 2 or 3 above.

Can you tell us how the blurb came about? Did you ask him? Did he come to you? Are you guys old drinking chums? Lol.

Also, you're going to love next month's featured author then (hint, hint)!

When we were working on Bad Apples 2 - myself, Adam Light, Evans Light, Edward Lorn and Gregor Xane, we knew we wanted to have a 6th "Bad Apple". We bantered around a few names, and KPB was one of the few we all agreed upon. So we invited him and him only to submit, and to our great luck, he did (we, of course, purchased the story - weren't asking for a freebie). I have read so much by him, with The Tent always returning to my mind, as well as some of his short stories like Offline, The Grief Frequency and Midlisters. But beyond that and one or two brief conversations about his Bad Apples story/contract, we didn't know each other. I've read many of his posts here in HA and his thread, but I don't think he knew me from E.L. James.

Anyway, when I was putting together Wrathbone, I thought I was making something good, and in the case of Wrathbone itself, somewhat literary - something a writer might appreciate as well as a reader. So I reached out to KPB, and his response was that he might take a look at it if he had time and that he Would only consider writing the intro if he had time AND he thought the work was good.

I considered that a better commitment than I deserved or could reasonably hope for. I didn't expect to hear back from him.

Then I received that intro, which was not only full of praise from someone who I admire both personally and professionally, but showed a real understanding of what I was going for with each tale. Look, I don't claim my work to be deeply profound or worthy of a Pulitzer, but his affirmation made me feel like I had at least succeeded in what I had set out to do.

For those of you aspiring and current writers, KPB is a man of many talents. His cover art skills are also top notch. And just as he wouldn't for me, I wouldn't give him a plug if it wasn't well deserved. I believe, through Bloodshot Books, I may be using his services for two upcoming covers (at least he has my vote).

Consequently, we asked KPB to submit to Bad Apples 3, and he did, but we did not select his story despite it being one of the best horror stories I have ever read. The reason being that it wasn't truly a Halloween story. I almost started my own cosmic horror anthology just so I could have that story. I know he sold it elsewhere, but I'm not sure where.

Badseedgirl | 1033 comments Jason, I just finished your book. My favorite story was "Revenge is a Dish" hands down. It was a wicked little tale, with just the right amount of blood. So often authors lean too heavy on splatterpunk in their attempt to shock the reader. This was a great introduction to you as an author. Kudos.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for the kind words. I think "Revenge" might be my favorite of the bunch, too. But then again, probably the only thing that scares me is being stranded in open water with all the things in it.
