Monika (monikal) | 674 comments Hi, the ACE with that cover already exists in the database, two of them actually, one seems to be published on 1st January 2004, the other lacks the published date. Both could be duplicates however. I'll add the date to the second on as 29th Jan as mentioned on amazon. You can find both here and here. But I'm going to upload the better quality cover and replace both the books' lesser quality ones.

Thanks for the information!

Gruia | 268 comments Hi Monika,

I purchased my copy last week, so I presumed the cover was a new version. How can you identify similar covers on GR, beyond skimming through the thousand other editions?

Also, if the copies you found are the ACEs of this one, then their correct page number should be 355 pages (the text of the novel) plus 30 pages (the Thomas Pynchon introduction). So 385 pages instead of 400. My copy contains a further 15 pages of advertisments for other Penguin books, which shouldn't be counted.

Monika (monikal) | 674 comments Hi again,
I have zero idea on how to find similar covers without going through all the other editions, I've been doing it the hard way by setting the per page book to max and whizzing my way through it all.

According to WorldCat there seem to be 325 pages. But since you own the copy, and I'm assuming you've gone through this, I'm changing the page count to 385.

Thanks for the details!

That is impressive! My eyes couldn't stand reviewing more than 100 entries. Note that you can set the displayed number to more than 100, by modifying it in the address bar, as such:
https://www.goodreads.com/work/editio...

It's been a while since I read the page numbering topic, but going through it again I saw this:
Introductory material paged using roman numerals is not included in the total page count.

The introduction by Thomas Pynchon is counted with roman numerals, so it seems that the correct page number ought to be 355 after all, for ISBN 9780141187761 and its ACEs. I apologize for misleading.

Monika (monikal) | 674 comments It's no problem, I've corrected the page count to 355.

Thanks for providing the correct details!

Setting the format reduces a bit, and I would try setting per publication date and than pagewise going near the year I need. (And if that fails going through the others with matching format)

Empress (the_empress) Yes, limiting to format and searching for publisher could work. Adding a cross-reference works better, but it is more time-consuming.

Monika when swapping the cover with better quality please leave a comment that you are doing so, otherwise to rest of the librarians (not reading this topic) looks like you've done an unsolicited cover change.

Separated ACEs for merging.
(Maybe they won't but we'll see. I personally think they are duplicates.)

Added cross-reference in description.

Thanks! Will keep that in mind.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 9386 comments and monika, do not enter the comment when you delete it, that doesn't get saved AFAIK, have to be entered with the upload the new one :)
Change comment is useful if you change page numbers too (especially if they are not from Worldcat and/or Amazon but from book in hand source=
