I am trying to find the name of a book that takes place in a post apocalyptic setting and features a young girl (around 7) who is deformed in the face. All my friend can remember about the book is that she goes on a journey, meets people, and she remembers something about fireflies. This book would have been written before the 1990's.

I know this is not much to go on, but I am hoping this triggers someone's memory. Thanks!

Swan Song has a main character who starts as a little girl about 7, and in the beginning there is a scene where she sees fireflies making formations on her window before the apocalypse event. She starts out normal looking, but becomes deformed later in the story, has growths on her head and face, and she definitely travels and meets people. :)
