From what I can remember this books protagonist is a ne'er do well. I think he is a beggar and he might be a very good liar. For some reason he is out in the dessert and he is with a bunch of marauders or something who've decided to kill him. He finds a bottle in the sand and threatens that it contains a genie, and by chance it actually does. I can't remember what its called at all but it would probably be considered young adult fiction and I read it in the 90s so it may of been published then. Also I think the cover was a picture of the desert with a bottle resembling an orangina bottle on it.
