Connie N. | 3775 comments And you'll probably get your 11 read before I've had a chance to finish my measly 4.

message 402: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Probably not -- i'm trying to get as caught up as possible on last year's HMD before I (inevitably) get six rounds behind on this year's... I have 1.5 books left from 2018 and 18 left from 2019...

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 617 comments I read Deadly Dog Days (Dog Days Mystery #1) by Jamie Blair picked by Connie (msg. #391) it was ok even if not what I expected a chick-lit with a little bit of cozy instead of the other way round. Most of the book I struggled with the MC and her attitude though luckily it looks like most of my issues were either resolved in the end or on the way to be soon. The most interesting part were the personalities of the dogs :-)
If I decide to extend my KU membership or decide to go for another month later this year I plan to read next one in series.
Thank you Connie for picking it!

I just abandoned A Frosty Mug of Murder (The Grumpy Chicken Irish Pub, #1) by Constance Barker (after forcing myself to continue for the last 75 out of 100 pages). I'd rather spell out ale in the scattegories challenge than read another 140 pages in this book. My main issues were: the many typos, an MC without a backbone and doing what others tell her (even if she tells them first what a bad idea it is) and therefore too busy to manage her family's bar, weak plot and a grumpy chicken ghost that started to destroy all poultry products out of the blue with the start of this book. I hope you like it more Jennifer.

Jennifer, I pick for you A Murderous Affair (Lady Katherine Regency Mysteries Book 4) by Leighann Dobbs because this cover looks interesting.

My next five (non-fiction for an change):
High and Low How I Hiked Away From Depression Across Scotland (Outdoor Adventure Book 6) by Keith Foskett Our God Saves by Valerie Howard That Bear Ate My Pants! by Tony James Slater The Lost Art of Intercession Restoring the Power and Passion of the Watch of the Lord by James W. I put this book back into Mt. TBR - there're so many references (an spoilers) to the author's two other series in the first four chapters I decided to read them first and continue with this series afterwards. Now I'm really regretting I didn't grab the books on sale from her 'big' series when I had the chance - so it will be some time until I come back to this one. I'm glad you picked this book I discovered a new romantic suspense author for me and I got the 2nd in this series now while it's on sale.

I'm going to pick A Song of War A Novel of Troy by Kate Quinn for you because I like the red, and also because I read some Kate Quinn recently and enjoyed it. I hope you like it!

I finished two of my recent picks this month: Thistles and Thieves (Highland Bookshop Mystery #3) by Molly MacRae and Save the Date by Mary Kay Andrews and enjoyed both.

I was hoping to read the entire book set in this month but it doesn't look realistic anymore (I only finished seven of the 12 books) so I thought I let you know what I think now.
I love most of the cast - especially two main characters, character development and relationships of the characters. The plot is is often pretty fun and entertaining even if unrealistic but for a chance I was able to enjoy the stories despite that fact. The writting style is mostly solid and well crafted with few typos in-between (so far I found 34 of those - over 7 stories and roughtly 750-800 pages, that's ok for me - especially after reading a couple of novellas yesterday that had more in less than 100 pages)
My two 'big' issues:
the mysteries, especially the way the MCs 'solve' the cases is weak. I even mentioned to a friend recently I think she'd make a great chick-lit author - there're enough authors combing chick-lit with a dash of mystery.
#6 in this series (An Artful Assassination) looks like a crossover between this series and Senoia Cozy Mystery Series. Several of the cases of the MC from Senoia are mentioned and it looks like the events of this book continue in the last one in that series. If you're as OCD about reading series in order as I am I'd recommend to read the first eleven books of the series set in Senoia, Georgia before you start #6 in this one.

All in all I enjoy these short mysteries (all between 100 and 110 pages) so much I set other of the author's series on my watch list and will keep a look out for deals of them - especially the Senoia Cozy Mystery box. After reading that I plan to re-read this travel cozies.

I hope this helps you to decide when it will be best for you to read it (or not at all) :-D

I have not read it, and I need a book with a beach on the cover for the Cozy Mystery monthly challenge, so thanks!

I knocked out a pick from post 437/440 -- Diamonds Are a Ghost's Best Friend (Beechwood Harbor Ghost Mysteries, #5) by Danielle Garrett - a nice light paranormal cozy so I'm now back at 8 behind... but I think I may be able to knock 3 or 4 of them out this month if all goes as planned.

Barb | 1895 comments Thanks, Jennifer :) At the risk of incurring your wrath for adding even more books to your to-read list, and if you enjoy history combined with time travel and a team of people who just can't quite seem to stay out of trouble, I highly recommend the Chronicles of St. Mary's series.

I've read the first two full-length books and the half-step books up to #2.5 (although the half-steps aren't critical to the ongoing story line), and can't wait to read the next to see what Max and the rest are up to now :)
