I personally loved: A Town Like Alice, by Nevil Shute. A fictional story set against the not-so-historically accurate backdrop of women POWs in WWII who were forced to march around Sumatra for two-and-a-half years, covering 1,900 kilometres (1,200 mi), with fewer than 30 people surviving the march. (this turned out to be a misunderstanding on Shute's part, but it's still a wonderful book.)
