Rachel | 3525 comments I haven't been to the theater but I saw the movie Split recently and it was pretty good-I think it came out last year.

I saw The Glass Castle today. This memoir hits a bit close to home and I immensely enjoyed the film. Read the book about 6 or 7 years ago.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

Just like my childhood :-)
My mom is the one who taught me how to Dumpster Dive. She also stole money from me on two occasions when I was age 10 and 17.

I'm okay with it now. At some point we have to make peace with the past and I think that was highlighted in The Glass Castle.

message 113: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3525 comments finished Gwendy's Button Box Gwendy's Button Box by Stephen King for task 5-cowritten by 2 authors. fun, quick read.

Rachel | 3525 comments Dustin Crazy little brown owl wrote: "I'm okay with it now. At some point we have to make peace with the past and I think that was highlighted in The Glass Castle."

When I saw the preview, I was concerned that they might have sugar coated the story the way that movies sometimes do-glad to hear they did a good job with the film.

I agree with you that it's important to make peace with the past-when we don't it can just drag us down and make us bitter and nobody needs that.

Yes, I was also concerned about a happy glowing story based on the movie trailer :-) It has been 6-7 years since I read the memoir, but I was quite happy with the film and the important issues showcased. The family moving around frequently, parents digging in the garbage, children trying to escape, not having enough to eat, parents stealing from and using the children, extended family relations etc.

All Birds Have Anxiety by Kathy Hoopmann
All Birds Have Anxiety

This book has cute, quirky photographs and presents an issue in a unique way. It's definitely worth taking a look at :-) P.S. I LOVE BIRDS!

Yesterday, I had the life-changing experience of viewing the film BRIGSBY BEAR in the movie theater. This is most excellently Quirky Good! BRIGSBY BEAR joins my list of Great Summer 2017 Quirky Films, all of which I highly recommend:

BRIGSBY BEAR
The Book of Henry
Beatriz at Dinner
A Ghost Story
Baby Driver

I think you have to drink wine while reading that book :-) to really get lost in the story you know.

Christine | 798 comments I didn't get a chance to add to the thread for my last book, The Slow Regard of Silent Things (The Kingkiller Chronicle #2.5) by Patrick Rothfuss . It's a book by Patrick Rothfuss, not his best effort but I understand why he wrote the book. I sure wish he would add another book to Kingkiller Chronicles. I guess this one will tide me over, lol, but just barely. I'm used to his more substantial books.

Everyone have a fun and safe holiday weekend!

I finally read The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss -I'm hoping that by the time I get to The Wise Man's Fear (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #2) by Patrick Rothfuss there will be a release date for book three (fingers crossed :)
Did you see the decks of cards that were inspired by the characters in the book? They were pretty cool.

Thursday Night I was riding my scooter home after working late with Chocolate Skulls. I hit a mountain lion on my scooter. Good thing my new orange scooter is arriving next week! :-) I am rather sore, bruised, scraped - but given the circumstances doing remarkably well.

My Harley went out with a bang! He has been a tough little scooter, great friend to me. We've been on so many adventures together and he wanted his last ride to be memorable.. I believe I. letting people do the things they need to do on their on. terms. I o my wish I had been wearing my riding jacket.

message 138: by Fred (new)

Fred (fredderoche) Do you need helmets on scooters? Without one it sounds like a really scary crash.

message 139: by Dustin the wind Crazy little brown owl, Colorful Colorado (new)

Dustin the wind Crazy little brown owl (dustpancrazy) | 2899 comments Mod
I have always worn a helmet when riding but Colorado does not require helmets for Motorcycle or Scooters (eye protection such as: glasses, face shield on a helmet or goggles are required).

Intelligent people always wear a helmet - I guess the others don't have much to lose.

The helmet was very helpful and I will be getting a new one - my face shield was shattered and a streak from the pavement on my helmet where my head hit the road and I slid along the asphalt.

I want to get an orange helmet to match my new orange scooter.

message 140: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments Thank goodness you are okay! What happened to the mountain lion? I would imagine it didn't do him a bit of good either!

Christine wrote: "Thank goodness you are okay! What happened to the mountain lion? I would imagine it didn't do him a bit of good either!"

There was no blood on the road. I don't think it hurt the mountain lion as much as the cosmic collision affected myself and the scooter. I think he is in hiding. By the time I picked up the scooter and got to the side of the road there was no sign of the mountain lion.

message 142: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments Again, I am so glad you are ok. The scooter is replaceable, one more memory to add to its life. The mountain lion is tough and probably has moved on to a place where it won't encounter anymore scooters or Dustins!
