Haha this reminds me of Jack Bauer on 24. Do you remember that show?

Mandy (penn_y_lane) | 547 comments We've been having a bit of a heatwave here in Wales too of 87F (31C) which is super hot for us, the down side though is it's humid too. So I've not been in the house much but out in the garden until dark lately. It's back to normal now though so at least I can sleep!

Am only just about to start my June read so I am getting behind again.

Sorry to hear about your arm Ann but how lovely to be able to only read and write ;-)

p.s. yeah Jack Bauer just went on and on and on lol great series though

Amber Martingale Kirsten, Harry Dresden gets multiple injuries on every case. In one a psychopathic werewolf known as a loup-garou, yanks his boot off. Can you say broken foot? Harry's damned lucky he didn't get some kind f infection from the bite!

Perri, 24 always made me think that shows like lthat make the terrorist's point about the West hating Islam... . A terrorist is nothing but a physically mature school yard bully! You get rid of bullies BY NOT GIVING THEM ANY KIND OF ATTENTION! Attention is what they WANT! Giving it to them is like throwing rocket fuel on a campfire!

That off my chest: I have a tie of 4 votes each for both Sherlock Holmes: The Will of the Dead and The Silver Pigs (Marcus Didius Falco #1). I need someone who hasn't voted yet to cast a tie-breaking vote.

message 104: by P.K. (new)

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Don't know that one, Amber; not into werewolves. But I do know about bullies. My dad told me when I was very young, never to back down with a bully, no matter how big they are. He was right, facing up to them is never what they expect. I've hung on to one or two brutes, usually talked them out of it, but I've always been the winner.

Perri | -43 comments I skipped my dog choice for June, since I'll have to request it and getting ready to visit family for the 4th of July holiday. But I do plan on reading Bel Canto and bet it's good as well! I hope to circle around back to the dog book too

message 108: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Definitely read Bel Canto, Perri! One of the best I've ever read.

Amber Martingale It's in Fool Moon, the second Dresden Files novel, P.K.

As for your remark about bullies. That's not worked for me. All but one of the bullies I have personally encountered stopped bugging me when I started ignoring them. The one who didn't, beat me up twice and ruined my book bags but got caught red handed by both school security and my mom the second time she beat me up. I was in 2nd grade...she was 3rd but was big enough that I think she she'd been held back from 5th grade for several years. She was big, mean and as stupid as the day is long.

The only thing that made her stop was getting caught by school security and sent to juvvie...AFTER my Mom had bitched to the school admin about it and they'd blown her off by saying there wasn't a damned thing they could do about it, even after Mom showed them my black eyes, busted lip and tattered book bag.

So I stand by what I said earlier about terrorists being nothing but physically mature school yard bullies who will go away if you stop paying attention to them.

If I don't get a tie breaker by Tuesday, I'l most likely be ordering both of the books I have a tie for and randomly picking a 3rd place book.

P.K. Davies | 549 comments That's a terrible story, Amber. I guess it's all relative as to the percentages; what are the chances? If you had been taught one or two tricks, like the ones you are reading about all the time (without weapons obviously) you could have prevailed. Like, with someone bigger than yourself, which that girl (I presume it was a girl) obviously was you would go for the knees or the groin. Big young people are not usually trained because they are big and think they don't need to be. I guess you should have spent a little less time listening to music and done a bit of Judo; you could have been the hero who taught that bully a lesson and made it easier for lots of others. My little niece, and she was little, was sent to Judo lessons at three, because she was little; didn't have any problems.
The trick is to see the trick before it matters. As to terrorists; I don't think ignoring them will work; ten million Londoners ignored them and some got killed.

message 112: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I wasn't taught any tricks like that at all. My parents didn't know any and even if they had, they were way too out of shape to be able to teach them to me. Nor did any of our neighbors offer to teach them to me after I went home with the injuries. They thought my parents should teach me how to defend myself and that it wasn't their place to interfere, P.K.

LOL. In second grade on through high school I was more a book and movie nerd than a music nerd.

In fact, the bully girl who attacked me wanted my book bag for herself. I told her "No" and walked away. Which was when she grabbed me and started beating on me...being egged on by her own mother. She didn't get what she wanted in any case because I DID try to pull my bag away. All she ended up with was the canvas to which the plastic face of a Cabbage Patch Doll had been stitched.

I swear my Mom damn near got into a fight with the bully girl's mom, I know she half pulled the school secretary out of her seat when we went to the office to report the initial incident. In fact, I was the one who had to calm Mom down before SHE got arrested and I got sent home with the cops, who would then have had to drop Dad off at school to pick up the car.

"Mom, calm down. She's not worth being sent to jail over and neither is the bully who beat me up."

My parents couldn't afford the lessons, especially since I was growing fast enough that I'd need two uniforms a month and even then the uniforms were like $75 each.

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Amber, that's so much a piece of social history, beautifully chronicled. There is so much there that portrays a particular environment; you must make a short-story or novella out of it. Start writing.
Ps. You won anyway. She didn't get what she wanted. Worth two black eyes.

message 114: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments Re. bullying, I think the social bulling girls seem to excel at can be more painful than physical. Harder to prove and defend against. A thousand cuts to the soul.

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Perri wrote: "Re. bullying, I think the social bulling girls seem to excel at can be more painful than physical. Harder to prove and defend against. A thousand cuts to the soul."

Yes, Perri. The birth of the internet has certinly brought out the worst in people. In Amber's case the bully was probably a victim of her own brainlessness, as is often the case, but with the online trolls they don't have that excuse. I'm afraid we see there the true state of humankind; the staus quo is aggression; kindness is a learned experience. I agree, that sort of bullying is worse, as we know from the number of young suicides. Sometimes I feel we are worse off for the internet. It is a fine balance at the moment but we could start a debate as to whether it should be closed down. But then I wouldn't be able to talk to you.

message 116: by Perri (new)

Perri | -43 comments IDK, PK, the social media has maybe brought more publicity to a problem as old as time. - gossip, cliques, social snubs... I think you are correct, we need to work harder to out and address bullying, as well as creating a voice for victims.

Didn't feel like I won a damned thing. Black eyes ARE not the same as an Olympic gold medal.

No way in Hell am I gonna write about it for publication!

Perri: Not what the cops say about why they don't like to get involved in breaking up a high school cat fight! Girls are just plain MEANER than boys.

No more votes for my books after today, please!

And Ann...I'm so sad! We both got our international drivers license so we could rent a car and drive the south of France to Italy and I thought we'd get our picture. I was so excited. But everyone we talked to warned us about driving in Italy and that we'd have to be crazy to do it. Hahahah I now completely know what they were talking about and it was a waste of our getting the licenses but we are alive. Lol Sad I didn't get to see your beautiful land you call home though.

message 127: by P.K. (new)

P.K. Davies | 549 comments Don't do it Amy. Barca's a great town but the Spanish economy is going downhill still and when the Euro devalues it will be pretty grim. There's also the Catalan severance agenda raising its head seriously again because of the eco divides in the country.
Agree about driving in Italy, although I love it. Got the car damaged just being parked in an innocent street in Naples - but that is the worst place; they think they're all escape drivers for the mafia.

As for Italian drivers, I've not found it a problem but, well, you have to have strong nerves, that's true...

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments Some years ago we decided to have dinner in Mexco. There is a good restaurant that serves wonderful carne asada. I had been there before so knew it was nice. We were there early, around 3pm so finished eating around 4. The waiter then warned us that it would be smart to leave Tijuana before dark - so we left immediately.

On the way out a Federale truck was in front with a mounted machine gun pointed toward the rear - right at us. I don't think he was aiming at us but just as we were turning toward the route that lead to the border, we saw a body laying in the street. I guess that was what he was looking for.

We haven't been back although I have a childhood friend who lives in Mexicale and wants me to visit. I told him I would love to see him, but San Diego sounds like a better bet for dinner.

Leaving today to visit family for the 4th of July holiday, so I'll be online less

Which movie? The Shipping News? I wasn't aware there was a new one with Glenn Close. I watched the one with Juliane Moore (I love her - she's such a great character actor) some time ago and liked it pretty much.
When I've seen the title on Perri's list my first thought was cool, I know the movie, but than I read the blurb and started to doubt if it's the same story - it was so different from what I recalled from the movie. I'm very curious what you think about.

I remember there being a movie, have not watched it, but it is based on the book. It stars Juliane Moore and Kevin Spacey (one ofmy favorites) AND Judi Dench-what star power! I read the raving reviews and not I need to watch it too

message 140: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments Oh I was totally mistaken! I was thinking it was Close when it was Moore. Thank you, ladies! It's from so long ago that I didn't even check with IMDB first. I just always remembered thinking I had wanted to see it and heard it was just okay.

message 141: by Amy (new)

Amy (thenikitagirl) | 636 comments I'll def want to read the book first but if you see the movie soon, Perri, definitely tell us what you think of it. I've learned in some cases it's not always best to read the book first. I didn't love the Still Alice movie as much because of it and yet she gave an incredible performance. I just felt the book moved me so much that the movie couldn't compare.
