Runell Do you guys think that This Savage Song would apply?

Mandy Sickle (thereadingdiaries) | 1343 comments Sounds like the MC is a villain but not a criminal. I would ask to double check on the question post. (Side note it sounds awesome)

Danielle Gypsy Soul (afdaniellet) | 1925 comments I would agree it sounds more like a monster than a criminal.

Review - I just couldn't get into this one. I read so many mysteries, so I really need for the beginning of the books to reach out and grab me. This one didn't, causing me to feel kind of lost and bored throughout. I listened to the audio version, however, so I think I'm going to slate this one for a reread of the actual book instead because it did get pretty good reviews. The narrator had a poor reading voice that wasn't very captivating, which is what I think gave me much of my trouble.

Review:
Lee and Taro are finally back in High Scape after entirely too much time spent running around on the now deceased Empress's errands, ready to get back to their actual job and the comforts of home. Things aren't all that rosy, however, as the change in their relationship is causing problems between them as well as with those who surround them, and strange things are once again going on in the city. A craze for spellcasting has swept into High Scape in their absence, tombs are being robbed so the ashes can be used in magic rituals, and a strange sickness is spreading at the riverfront... and somehow Lee and Taro end up getting dragged into all of it.

As much as I adore this series, I really didn't enjoy this installment as much as the previous books. Somehow all the characters annoyed me immensely in this one - Lee came across as even more narrowminded and stand-offish, while Taro seemed even more recklessly childish and kept throwing jealous temper tantrums because these two idiots simply can't manage to communicate like reasonable adults for one goddamn second and it's all exceedingly frustrating to follow. I'd have liked to spend more time with the rest of the plot instead of these two bitching at each other and being total morons when it comes to all the pesky relationship stuff.

I've let Ezi know about Jaime being MIA at the moment and asked her where we go from here if she doesn't come back before the deadline.

Runell Okay, so I looked at the questions and how to play thread before I decided to ask, but could I use this manga as the crime/MC is a criminal? If not, it's okay as I'm just rereading a book, but I could have this one done in a few hours versus finishing tomorrow pretty late.

Death Note Black Edition, Vol. 2 by Tsugumi Ohba

Since the description is in what I believe is French, this is the synopsis for the first book:

Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects--and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal...or his life?

Much Ado About Nothing (Shakesbear Shifters of Verona Book 4) by Lily Cahill
Book: Much Ado About Nothing
Qualification: Shakesbear Shifters of Verona #4
Finished: 13 Jul 2017
Rating: ★★★★★

Review
Tris has her first chance to prove herself taking on a project that has family ties but it's just what she needs to make a name for herself. After a steamy one night stand, she heads off for Verona to start her tribute to the young lovers who committed suicide. Little did she know that her one night stand Ben just happens to be living in Verona. He also just happens to be the local hardware store where she planned to use for the build.

Ben never expected to see Tris again least of all in his shop working for the Carpathians which are to blame for the death of his friend. While he would like to refuse to work with her he's raising his little sister and needs the money for her schooling. The pair finds themselves drawn to each other falling in love but when a misunderstanding comes between them will they be able to fix it? Will two rival families be able to settle their difference?

I like both Ben and Tris they work well together and complement each other perfectly. I love the idea that they are two of my favorite Shakespeare characters from my favorite play. They are just so perfect for each other and I knew after that one night that they would see they are destined to be together.

I've had this series on my to-read list for a while but never got around to it yet. I've been wanting to read the 4th one because it's a shifter spin on my favorite play. I admit I skipped the first three to jump right to book 4 and I don't feel that I missed much other than getting to know prior characters that are in this one. I love the authors spin on a classic enhancing the story using shifters was brilliant in my mind. I also love that the author used some of the dialogue from the play like when Tris and Ben are verbally sparring. This is one of those books I couldn't put down reading in one sitting. I loved every moment and plan to go back to read the prior books. Highly recommend if you are a fan of Shakespeare and shifter happy ever after you check this series out.

Review: I am a big fan of this series and have enjoyed all the books so far. I really enjoyed this one as well. Both Naomi and Chaska were wonderful characters that fit well together. I also really enjoyed the information about the rescues, the native american culture and the animals and landscape of Colorado. There was a small mystery and just enough action. The romance was sweet and I enjoyed watching Naomi grow throughout the book. Chaska was a wonderful hero and not only was he sweet, hot and smart but he loved to take care of people. As always the secondary characters were interesting and added to the book.

Runell Guys, I'm so sorry for getting this review posted late, but we had an emergency at work with one of our residents and I've just now gotten out which is well after 11:59. Family had to be called and we all had to sign as witnesses, so I do apologize wholeheartedly, but there was nothing that I could do to get this up before the deadline. Had I got off when I was supposed to at 11, it would have been a whole different story.

message 169: by Denise, Manufacturing Director (new)

Denise (destiny_chan) | 7431 comments Mod
That sounds awful, Runell. :( Of course if there's an emergency, there's nothing you can do! Perhaps Ezi would accept it as extenuating circumstances? Especially since I've also seen a couple of other teams roll with their last reviews in after the deadline. On the other hand, Mandy asked in the discussion thread whether reading a manga would work and got a negative reply.. just a few hours ago though, so you couldn't have seen it because you were at work dealing with an emergency. Yeah, Idk. Difficult situation. Maybe just pm Ezi, lay it out for her and see what she says?

message 170: by Runell (last edited Jul 14, 2017 01:28AM) (new)

Runell I will definitely do that. If she'll let me, I read another book that will fit and maybe she'll just let me switch reviews (I just saw that This Savage Song is tagged as crime)

message 172: by Runell (new)

Runell I've sent her a message so hopefully she'll agree that it was extenuating circumstances, but if not, I really do apologize guys. It makes it all the worse that I technically could have had a review up days ago if I had thought to check to see if anyone had shelved this book as "crime". :/

I understand things happen and I'm sure Ezi will too.
We will figure it out and if we have to take a week off we can hope for double six's when we roll =D

message 175: by Denise, Manufacturing Director (new)

Denise (destiny_chan) | 7431 comments Mod
Maybe put up the review for This Savage Song just in case, because even if she doesn't allow the manga, you then have a book that qualifies (whether we have to skip today's roll or not).
I've been snooping on the other teams a bit and e.g. teams 7 and 8 had their last reviews in way after the deadline and have rolled anyway, so I'm not above using the playground argument of "If they get to, why shouldn't we?" - quite a number of teams would have to sit this week out if the hard deadline is applied equally for everyone.

message 176: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Sickle (thereadingdiaries) | 1343 comments Didn't we get to roll on Thursday's but have to have all reviews in by midnight Friday? I remember it always being like that in the past. I think it just changed this round and maybe that's why we aren't the only ones struggling with the change.

message 177: by Denise, Manufacturing Director (new)

Denise (destiny_chan) | 7431 comments Mod
I think we also rolled on Fridays but still had until midnight Friday to get the reviews in. Anyone who hasn't been following the discussion thread and has played before probably hasn't noticed the change - I didn't either until we were all confused about it and asked Ezi directly.

message 178: by Denise, Manufacturing Director (new)

Denise (destiny_chan) | 7431 comments Mod
Whichever way it plays out, the rules need to be applied to everyone equally, so either several teams don't roll this week or we get to after all. I think the safest thing to do would be for Runell to post her review of the definitely approved book and if Ezi doesn't reply before the rolling cutoff at midnight, roll just in case but not act on it yet until we hear from her. What do you think?

This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity, #1) by Victoria Schwab

Book: This Savage Song
Qualified: Shelved as Crime
Pages: 427
Date Finished: 7/13/17
Rating: 5/5

Review:

It's official, I'm reading every single Victoria Schwab book I can get my hands on. YA or adult, if it has her name on it, I'm reading it because this. was. amazing.

If I've learned anything about Victoria Schwab as a writer it's that she's not afraid to do different and that she's fantastic while doing it. I found This Savage Song wholly original with a well developed world and cast of characters.

A lot of people have difficulty with Schwab's pacing, but it's her slow, just ambling along pace that first sucks me in because I know that eventually you're going to go from la-la-la, just chilling, walking around to you better run for your lives, faster, faster break-neck speed and I find it quite exhilarating. So while you may have to push yourself sometimes to get really into the story, once you do, it's hard to stop.

If you haven't read this book, read it.

Now, personally, I've got to get my hands on Dark Duet as quickly as possible.

Review - This book was such a welcome surprise. I was not expecting much from it all. I'm not sure why. Maybe because the cover is a little cheesy? Also, I haven't read much shapeshifter stuff beyond the typical YA werewolf stuff. But I absolutely loved it! Review:
Magical societies are among Pete and Jack's least favourite things, and yet they end up having to deal with one once again. After a bunch of shadowy figures approach Pete in a graveyard to extend an invitation to attend a gathering of the Prometheus Club, complete with a lovely little "attend or die" compulsion spell attached, she and Jack have little choice but to travel to Manchester, the city where Jack grew up and to which he would very much have preferred never to return, and find out what this newest collective of magical nutjobs want with them. Which, it turns out, is for them to join up - and if they'd been aware of the consequences, they'd probably have protested a little louder. Instead, they end up facing off with demons, zombies, and, quite possibly worst of all: Jack's deadbeat father, who just so happens to also be involved in all the magical shit going down.

I found this installment a little less annoying than the previous ones, probably because for once Pete and Jack spent so much time either busy with more important things or bitching at other people that they didn't spend endless amounts of time bitching at each other in ways that made me want to slap both of them to shut them up. The most interesting part of the book (for me at least) was definitely the end, however, with Belial once again popping up out of the blue and laying the groundwork for what might just be a pretty good series finale coming up.

message 192: by Runell (new)

Runell I'm going to have to come back and fix the review for Magic Bites when I get home, but here it is:

Okay, so, I really don't know what to say about Magic Bites because I'm very confused. I understand that this is a very beloved series, and I've been told that the third book is where the series really takes off, but this book for me was VERY lackluster.

As the reader, you're thrown into this world and are explained things as you go, which is great because you're shown and not told told told, but it was confusing. All the different shapeshifters and their clans and rules . . . I was like, what? A lot of times I had no idea who was who, who they were loyal to, and what they were. It's an interesting world with interesting characters (love Kate and her sarcasm), but it just didn't quite hit the mark for me in this book and I'm not quite sure if I want to try and stick it out until the third book. We shall see.

Book - Pack Ebon Red (The Seven Mates of Zara Wolf Book 1) by C.M. Stunich
Qualification - Shapeshifter
Date Finished - 7/19/17
Rating - 5 stars

Zara is the White Wolf next in line to lead the pack following in her mother's footsteps. It's time for her to go through the pairing process to choose a mate and she has lots of options 7 of them to be exact. Now that she's going to be the alpha she has to choose a mate but she has plenty of time to make the right choice. The choices are tough the man she loves, the one her mother wants her to choose, the one who lost an eye with a kiss, or any of the other dashingly handsome men.

However, choosing a mate is the last thing she wants to be thinking about as her fellow pack members are going missing without explanation. With the help of her new mates, Zara sets out to find the missing werewolves finding that something more dark and sinister is unfolding around them. Pulled into the world of vampires by her best friends mom who's secretly transitioning into a vampire she learns that they may be the ones causing the trouble. However, meeting with the local witch coven proves that they aren't so innocent either which causes her to question the intentions of the fae. Will they be able to save the missing wolves or will it be too late? How will Zara choose just one of her men?

I love Zara she's a loyal friend but also a strong leader when it comes to protecting those she loves. I have to admit I'm overwhelmed by all her potential mates each one brings something a little different to offer which makes me think that she will change the rules and keep them all. I also really like Nic he was her guard who turned into one of her 7 mates and he really get's Zara.

I've been anxiously waiting to get my hands on Ebon Pack Red for months since I first glimpsed the stunning cover. I couldn't wait to dive right into Zara's story's story and learn about her mate pairing with 7 werewolves. I'm a huge fan of werewolf books and found the concept captivating with its own unique spin. The characters are easy to connect with I loved them all even the bad guys are the kind you enjoy disliking. This is my first book by the author and I loved her story tellings it was easy to get lost in Zara's story and I can't wait to read the next one and see what will happen. This book has it all romance, magic, mystery, good vs. evil and a harem of sexy werewolf men. Highly recommend checking out if you are fans of paranormal romance.

Had a little bit of a book hangover with this one. =D

Review: This book was a bit slower than the first three books and there were a lot more characters in this one. Although I really enjoyed it I miss the book revolving around the courtyard and I struggled a little with remembering who was who in all the different locations. Most of the book is about the others and intuits preparing for the "culling" that's coming and hoping that they and the few humans that they are friends with will survive. The trademark humor was still here and I laughed out loud a few times. Not many scenes with Meg and Simon though so that was a little disappointing. Overall, not my favorite but I still really enjoyed this book and I do love this series.
