Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

How am I just now realizing the Batman/Joker/Harley Quinn comparisons?? It's OBVIOUS!

While Misa is not the depiction of women we want or need, she is such an interesting character. While I wish that a female in this series could be seen as intelligent and wanting for something more than love and admiration, I still really enjoy Misa's storyline and motives. She's mentally unwell. She's longing for a fanatical love and wants to obsess over someone the way others obsess over her. I can understand that and enjoy it. But I have to recognize the issue with Misa being the only depiction of women in this volume and it being such a cliche and poor representation.

Other than that obvious failing, I really enjoyed this volume. I love when L and Light meet and how they navigate working beside each other as well as against each other.

Ryuk remains a favorite. What a sassy king.

Rem is an interesting addition though I don't understand her motives. She falls so easily for Misa (who in my opinion is not a character worth risking anything for). I can't comprehend the ride-or-die mentality that Rem seems to have for her. But I enjoy her character none the less.

Over all, I really enjoyed this volume and was glad it seemed to have put a lot of it's faults from the first volume to the side.

Team Light

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
جزء رائع بحق وشدني جدا، بجانب المفاجآت مفاجأة تلو الاخري...كان هناك العديد من المشاعر بهذا الجزء...اعجبني جدا جزء عائلة لايت والحب الغامض الذي ظهر بحياته من طرف واحد
واكثر ما اثر بي هي صداقة حقيقية أيضا ستنشأ ولكنها أيضا من طرف واحد للأسف
والمؤكد هنا مورال او حكمة القصة... ان سوء الحظ بالمرصاد لمن يملك مثل تلك القوة
قوة القتل
مهما كان مدي استحقاق البعض للاختفاء من علي وجه العالم
حسنا، من اخدع؟ مازلت بحاجة لمفكرة كتلك
Concluso questo volume che racchiude il 3° ed il 4° albo della saga di Death Note.
Il terzo albo parte molto in sordina, anzi forse si prende proprio una bella pausa. Il ritmo è più lento e c'è tutta una parte di ragionamento e studio, ci sta, anche se mi ha un po' annoiato, ma forse è stato meglio così, perchè poi c'è un finale col botto!!!
Il quarto invece è una corsa al cardiopalma, ci sono colpi di scena a profusione e la storia si fa sempre più cattiva...
La curiosità per il proseguo, è alle stelle!
Rereading this series brings me pure joy.
The relationship between L and Light reminds me so much of Sherlock and Moriarty. There is a fascination in the other’s intelligence, as well as a growing respect for their opponent. And yet, for one to succeed, the other must fail.
As the story continues, we watch the back and forth of the characters as they play a riveting game of cat and mouse.
Moves are made. People are killed. And L gets just a little bit closer to his goal.
When L said that he hoped Light wasn’t Kira because Light was his friend... I don’t remember feeling this shitty when I watched this scene in the anime. 😩 The tension is so strong in this series, it keeps me on the edge of my seat the whole time. So good.
SERIE DEATH NOTE VOL 2
Lettura di gruppo E&L
Le cose qui si complicano e la lotta tra L e Light è sempre più serrata. Per non parlare poi delle new entry.
Molto interessante. E' uno dei pochi manga che mi cattura totalmente facendomi dimenticare il resto.
Adesso però voglio proprio leggere il prossimo volume!
I love the series so much, especially the first half. The Black Editions are such quick reads and the plot is keeping me on the edge of my seat. I also appreciate that Death Note is a somewhat "deeper" manga, dealing with important questions of morality and whether some lives are worth more than other lives.
Ah, what can I say?
Actually, I have quite a bit to say...just not right now but I will say...this is AMAZING. The cat and mouse dichotomy is nail-biting and oh so tense. I love it!
More to come
I kinda hate how L gets everything right without much evidence. I love the slow forming friendship between the two main characters. Misa is an interesting character, makes the story more complicated but her case is resolved too quickly Imo.
The story is as good as in the previous volume, but the sexist portrayal of female characters bothered me a little.
El protagonista de este manga es Light Yagami, un joven adolescente de 17 años. Es un joven atractivo, popular entre las chicas, muy responsable, serio y muy inteligente (ha quedado el primero en los exámenes nacionales). Light quiere ser inspector de policía y tiene un sentido de la justicia con mucha personalidad. Es un personaje entre luces y sombras y entre la cordura y la locura. Ya vimos en el tomo I que encontró un "Cuaderno de muerte" (o Death Note).
La trama es una mezcla de historia policíaca con características de la novela negra y un toque del folclore japonés. En este segundo tomo, la tensión entre Light y L va a ir aumentando a niveles extremos. L, un enigmático joven que nunca da la cara pero con una gran inteligencia, se presenta ante Light en la universidad como L, una estrategia muy arriesgada pero infalible. Además, Light ayudará codo con codo a L para capturar a Kira. Además de esto, aparece un nuevo Kira. Un doble deseoso de conocer al original, muy impulsivo y que no comparte los mismos ideales de este, por lo que va un poco por su camino, haciendo lo que le da la gana con tal de conseguir su fin: conocer a Kira. Además, este falso Kira tiene el ojo de shinigami, lo que le hace un ser aún más peligroso.
Este segundo tomo es mucho más emocionante que el primero, de hecho me ha gustado muchísimo más. Los personajes van creciendo de manera exponencial, aunque hay algo que me choca un poco. Y es que muchas de las deducciones de L, sin ninguna pista, parece que se la saca de la manga (o mejor dicho, los autores). Sus deducciones me parecen en ocasiones muy poco reales, porque de la nada dice algo que luego se convierte en realidad.
Ohba ha creado una compleja trama con subtramas y una multitud de personajes secundarios, todo ello envuelto en un halo de intriga. Vamos a ver también una lucha intelectual y de habilidad entre L y Kira, así como el proceso en la investigación y lo continuos obstáculos a los que se tendrá que enfrentar Kira, desplegando toda su inteligencia a velocidad de vértigo. Un shonen con unos personajes muy bien conseguidos y muy carismáticos y con continuos giros argumentales que darán emoción y mantendrán en una continua tensión al lector.
El dibujo de Obata es un dibujo muy perfilado y muy bien detallado. Es un dibujo muy bueno en el que vamos a ver un extenso catálogo de expresiones faciales. Los entornos también es un punto fuerte en este manga. Lo que más me ha llamado la atención han sido los dos protagonistas. L y Kira salen representados como dos adolescentes de gran belleza pero son totalmente opuestos: uno es rubio y el otro moreno, uno bien arreglado y el otro más dejado. Esa dualidad, con sus parecidos y diferencia, es lo que más me ha gustado.
En resumidas cuentas, este manga es un shonen con una historia que va entre el género policíaco y la novela negra, con tintes del folclore japonés. Una historia con unos personajes muy bien construidos y carismáticos que crecen de forma exponencial en este segundo tomo y que atrapa al lector con sus continuos giros argumentales que le pondrá en constante tensión. Una historia en la que a ratos te identificarás con los ideales de uno y a ratos con el de otro. Una edición digno para un coleccionista y muy recomendable.
"I've never once considered finding that notebook and gaining this power a misfortune. In fact, it's made me happier than I've ever been. And I'm going to create a perfect world."
Death Note is a rollercoaster ride. Seeing as the foundations for the story's world had already been made in the first volume, in the second volume many complex details and properties of the Death Note and the Shinigami are brought to light (there's a very intentional pun in here :p).
Death Note: Black Edition, Volume II is comprised of Death Note, Volume 3: Hard Run and Death Note, Volume 4: Love. During Death Note, Volume 4: Love a new character is introduced. And the title of the volume already gives a bit of a hint. The new character quickly becomes very significant to the story line.
And a whole lot of mind games, manipulation and that sort of thing goes down. The stakes were rising higher and higher by the second, and the story got more addicting at the same rate.
Death Note is so good! I can't wait to read more! Luckily, I already own Death Note: Black Edition, Volume III otherwise I'd go nuts. This story just gets juicier by the second. It's like a really good TV series you can't turn off once you start watching it.
Oh how I love these books and this story. The logic gets more and more twisted and convoluted but I just think its so funny. These two "boys" (Light and L) making things more and more complicated for no other reason than their own weird logic. Things certainly get moving a lot more in this volume and again the anime has pretty much followed word for word, which I think is great. I look forward to continuing with the series.
I don't know whether to love or hate this series LOL. It's obviously brilliant because I devour them in one sitting and want to read more, but oh my gosh do I yell a lot when reading these because Light has to be the most frustrating character EVER.
There's so much tension and high stress situations that you just stay captivated the entire time. It's an intense game of cat and mouse where both sides are equally as smart and just keep out doing each other every chance they get. The addition of a second Kira had me pulling my hair out. As if we needed to complicate the situation even more! I honestly do not know how this story is going to end and the fact that there's a total of 6 volumes has be scared. What more can possibly happen? How will Kira be brought to light? Will he be brought to light? I just have so many questions!!
Also, the cliff hangers on these are insane.
