Discussion thread on Rowan Whitethorn, a character who makes their appearance in Book #3 in the series, Heir of Fire.

Warning: There may be spoilers here for those who have not read Heir of Fire. Proceed with caution!

Rafaela Sousa | 29 comments SPOILER ALERT (Heir of fire)
When Rowan called Celaena/ Aelin "Fireheart" for the first time I went madly crazy with fangirling. I was so shiping Aelin and Rowan as friends as lovers...as anything. I just love these two together. And then "Their hands clasped between them, he whispered into her ear, 'I claim you, too, Aelin Galathynius.' " ♥♥♥ And I thought "I'm going down with this ship!" I was listening to Sail from Awolnation again and again. Rowan was so instrumental in Aelin healing, and not only healing her body, mind and heart, but also her soul and accepting her scars and real name, and being proud of them, they're so much alike. And I think Aelin too give the most precious gift to Rowan, she made him smile, really smile again, his eyes being bright, hope, she gave him friendship, another human being by your side, finally she gave him intimacy, not romantic yet, but I hope at some moment they will go there, but that kind of intimacy that is beyond definitions, they were two human beings healing together and becoming connected after so much grief. That's a big thing. "It was a long story, and sometimes she grew quiet and cried - and during those times he leaned over to wipe away her tears." There is something beautifully terryfing in someone knowning your whole story of life. Powerfull moment indeed between Rowan and Aelin. And when she freed him from the blood oath...I was...I don't know...there's no words to summon...only him calling her: " 'Aelin', he murmured, and it wasn't a reprimand, or a thank-you, but...a prayer." Oh my God...my heart nearly burst from my chest to the skies. It was so beautiful, this moment. This vow. This choice. And despite that he at the early begining reminded me of some Chaol's traits (the soldier, royalty guard and the teacher one), and some of Dorian's (being a prince too and a good listener and a friend) Rowan ended up reminding me more of Sam, in his defiance from Maeve as Sam challenged Arrobyn and in his despair in protect Aelin, the two of them were being contained by others, when Celaena/Aelin was suffering some steps ahead and both of them went crazy, they didn't watched petryfied or gave words of encouragement but they fought wildly to get loose, threatening friends and others (depending on the case). And anyway despite the similarities with other characters, I think Rowan is a unique and fascinating character and I'm rooting for him.

Kaina (kainal) | 30 comments THIS. I wasn't a big fan of Rowan at the beginning but towards the end O_O MY god that boy can make my heart do some crazy things. While I was reading I couldn't decide whether what they had was romantic or simply platonic. I'm thinking its currently the latter but think (and am seriously hoping) that it will become something more later. Because lets face it, together they would be absolutely lethal, the queen/king type of lethal. And I adore the way they worked as a team towards the end, truly the best type of partners in crime.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I love Rowan. I totally ship him and Celaena/Aelin! Even though I doubt it'll happen. My friend who ships Chaol and Celaena keeps telling me that. . . .and I'm all "I know. Shut up." I still ship them though.

message 5: by Kaina (new)

Kaina (kainal) | 30 comments To be honest right now anything is possible. Maas could take the story into countless of directions and although I ship Celeana and Chaol Im starting to like the idea of Celeana and Rown

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

First and second times through ToG I shipped Chaolaena, but then when I read CoM, I wasn't sure if I still did. I like how angsty that relationship's gotten, but I don't ship it. I really do hope Aelin/Rowan becomes a thing.

message 7: by Kaina (new)

Kaina (kainal) | 30 comments Something I noticed while re-reading is that we barely get to read in Rowan's point of view and when we did it was only two times. Sometimes authors do this to not reveal certain things to the reader. Could this be because Maas is hiding Rowan's feelings? :O *theories go berserk*

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Ooh, I like that. . . .

I hope so much that you're right!!! I also hope that Rowan will make an appearance in the next book, I'm afraid that the nex book will end in some great scene where magic will return again and therefore we would only see Rowan in book 5, not 4. But I really expect to be wrong in this matter. We need more Rowan

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I think he will have his POV in it, and he'll have a plot that somehow ties into the other ones.

I'd love to read more Rowan's POV for sure! Fingers-crossed Ms. Maas includes some in the next book :)

message 25: by Anna (last edited Sep 18, 2014 05:03PM) (new)

Anna | 22 comments Prepare for major, internal fangirling and uncontrollable feels.
Personally, I always felt Celaena was to good for all the other male leads in the story (the best love interest before Rowan has been Sam but he needed to die for plot sake + love martyr = feels for life) (OMG WHAT IF HE CAME BACK IN A LATER BOOK... that would be a shocker... back to the point). She is just so badass that I felt like she left the guys in her dust and that they were just normal characters who got ensnared in her web or lies and deceit and beauty, and that they could never really stand as permanent love interests.

But then.... ROWAN. Now if there is anyone even sort of close to being as badass as Celaena it is him. HE UNDERSTANDS HER. So far, no character has known everything about her (INCLUDING US!!! <3 sarah J Maas) but now he does and he's chill and UNDERSTANDS. No one else has even come close to understanding her strife, pain, and what she needs (Chaol doesn't accept all of her and will never comprehend all her personalities)... and... yeah...and... u feel me. Im all for the brooding, immortal, injured love interest and plus rowan is sexy and thats all you really need.

I mean seriously put Rowan in a fighting cage with Chaol and who's gonna win.... I think we all know. Celaena needs someone who can keep up with her yet also keep her in line soo... the choice is clear.

Chaol was fun and good for Celaena but now it's Aelin's turn and he just isn't equipped for her. Now that Aelin is back he's not right anymore and she has moved on (hello, his ring was taken off).

aka i just get way to obsessed

Go Anna! But Rowan is better than Sam.

message 27: by Anna (new)

Anna | 22 comments ^^^^ oh def. not even a competition

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

=D I liked Sam for a while, but then he annoyed me.

message 29: by Anna (new)

Anna | 22 comments He was sweet and I like that he was someone she lost and mourns over, but he never could have been the final love interest.
It gives more depth since both of them lost people they love.... sooooo basically what I'm saying is Rowan = boss dominator of all love interested in all things concerning Celaena.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Amen to that! I agree that he couldn't have been. He and Chaol are there for the angsty feels. Dorian is not really a love interest anymore, I wager; he seems to have gotten over Celaena.

message 31: by Anna (new)

Anna | 22 comments hahah agreed... couldn't have said it better! (....'angsty feels' ;) ) And even though it is mean, I was secretly not sad that Sorsha gets killed because Dorian (and the rest of them) need a dose of what Celaena has been going through her whole life. He needs that extra push and loss to understand what everyone else feels.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I didn't like her that much. And yeah, he really does. Now that he's trapped as everyone else has been, what'll he do? He'll have to grow up, I think. Why does there have to be a full year???????????

Laura | 102 comments I don't think I can even add anymore to this, you guys have just spelled it out FOR me. I mean, if someone tries to argue with me over Chaol being "the one" for her still I'm just gonna send them this link and be like:

"So what do you have to say now, huh? Oh, nothing? Yea, I thought so."

I kinda wanna send it to Maas even just to try and sway her to make SOMETHING happen with Rowan and Celeana in the next books lol. It just has to. Anything at all.

Even if nothing happens romantically from here on out:

YES

I told my friend who is a Chaolaena shipper that I'm not expecting it to happen, but it'd be brilliant if it did. Your ship is sinking. Mine's being built.

If it doesn't happen I'll just use one of Celaena's daggers to stab myself.

@Jan: don't use a dagger - it's too messy. Use quick-acting poison instead #AssassinTips

message 44: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin Ford (caitfromspace) Rowan was one of my favorite characters in Heir of Fire. Don't get me wrong, I love Celaena, but sometimes I want to strangle her for her poor, misguided, blind judgment. Rowan handled her so well and put her back in her place.

However, I'm really torn at who I want to ship with Celaena. I love Aedion, but they're like cousins and I don't see that moving past blood loyalty. I don't think it should be Dorian. And I really like Chaol, but he didn't really wow me in Heir of Fire.

I think Rowan may not be prepared for a mate. Just the way his character is written, I don't think they'd work together, yet. All in all, I loved Rowan, but the idea of him being a match for Celaena - the debate rages on in my head.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

@Booknut & Darlin': Oh, my apologies, miladies. How ignorant of moi. Oh, hey, I've got a better idea. If those two don't end up adorably together(meaning Celaena chooses someone else or one of them dies[Gods above, I hope I'm wrong!!!]), why don't both of you kill me? That'd definitely make things easier because I'm not sure I can handle weapons or poisons at that time without killing Maas and everyone around me.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, I'm just being dramatic. But still..

I completely agree with you! As you said, the way his character is written just suggests that he will never get over his mate, I believe, although he and Celeana have this crazy bond, it's more like the unromantic soulmate connection (much like Christina and Meredith in Grey's anatomy) I ADORE AEDION SO MUCH. Right now we perceive them as cousins but remember they haven't seen each other in ten years, those feelings would have never had a chance to develop. Also, remember that part when Aedion asked if he would be king if that was what Celeana wished? Perhaps some foreshadowing. As for Chaol, don't get me wrong I love the guy but he was just such a let down in heir of fIRE

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Aedion and Rowan are some of the most epic characters!

message 50: by Anna (new)

Anna | 22 comments @Kaina

Although I disagree with you (/hoping you are wrong) about Rowan & Celaena, I agree that Chaol was a total flop.
