SOLVED. Male leaves home to go to University. [s]

This was definitely set in England and was about a shy, quite withdrawn lad moving into halls of residence.
The plot then revolved around him going on student nights out and making new friends. There was also quite a bit about him meeting a girl at a dinner party but she already had a boyfriend.
The part that really sticks out for me was near the end-one of his new friends (who was a popular sporty type) commits suicide.
I want to say this is YA. I read this around 7years ago.

Yes current-i do remember things like prices of drinks and music being mentioned on these student nights out which were spot on for the time of me reading it around 7years back.
