Amanda | 1527 comments Lagullande, does Homegoingwork for 51% Ghana ?

And setting for Outlaws?

message 102: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments Phoebe, you say Vater Morgana: Eine persische Familiengeschichte is mostly set in Austria, is it 51% or more ?

message 103: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments Only the addition of Turkey this time round, so I will update the map on the next update.

Hi Amanda

No joy, I'm afraid. Homegoing is just under 50% in Ghana, and Outlaws is in Spain which has already been claimed.

Oh well, leaves it open for the Fall sub challenge then!

Amanda | 1527 comments Tien, I am guessing I am safe to presume The Memoirs of Cleopatra is over 51% Egypt ?

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3095 comments Amanda wrote: "Tien, I am guessing I am safe to presume The Memoirs of Cleopatra is over 51% Egypt ?"

Yep, close to 90% actually. I didn't note it cuz I thought that was done already, sorry...

All good, I record the first 3, and only questioned because it had Rome listed also.

message 109: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments I don't see the relatively new country of South Sudan on the spreadsheet? Is it missing or am I just not seeing it?

Jen from Quebec :0) (muppetbaby99) | 2 comments OH...MY...GOD. *HOW* has it taken me so very long to find this wonderful group of people!? I have just spent the last 30 mins reading through the mainpage stuff of this group, and now I am here and just had to stop and interact and let everyone know that I am absolutely giddy to have found this place/challenges and that I cannot wait to dive in. Awesome. --Jen from Quebec :0)

Amanda | 1527 comments Ed wrote: "I don't see the relatively new country of South Sudan on the spreadsheet? Is it missing or am I just not seeing it?"

Hi Ed, it may not be there because it wasn't on the list that we were taking the countries from (which I think was one that we had also used before for a sub challenge maybe, so made the most sense to use). If I can remember where we shared the link I will add it here.

(I am a little out of sorts today, a big weekend of Spring cleaning has left me less than my usual coherent and capable self, so if it takes me a while I apologise.)

Welcome! We have fantastic mods and fantastic participants. The tasks will lead you to tons of wonderful books. I've been away a few months and am really excited to be back.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments And we're excited to have you, Denise. You can't know how my heart smiled when I saw your posts yesterday!

Thanks, Elizabeth, that is such a relief. I was feeling guilty about hitting you and Kate with all those posts at once. It is just wonderful to feel well enough to be back!

ETA: And that was such a kind thing to say, Elizabeth, thank you! :-)

You'll love this group! I've never lived in Québec (been to Montreal a couple of times) but originally hale from BC and spent 4 years in Ottawa, so close to PQ.

Sam (theliteraryhooker) | 1008 comments Yay, another Québécoise! Welcome, Jennifer :)

And welcome back, Denise!

Amanda | 1527 comments Coralie, Leapfrog and Other Stories, I see the main story is set in Cuba, are the rest, or does the main story cover 51% of the text ?

message 122: by Coralie (new)

Coralie | 2755 comments They are both mostly set in Cuba and the main story covers over 51% of the text.

message 123: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments Thanks Tien for messing up my RG plan :P

I had Zimbabwe down, but suspect I am not going to get the book anyway since it is 2 months overdue for return ...

Fortunately, thanks to the various recommendations of Book Lust to Go: Recommended Reading for Travelers, Vagabonds, and Dreamers I am working my way through making my own list based on the countries we have, so am sure to find a replacement.

message 124: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments Argh! Tien, you stole another one!

I obviously really need to keep this list more up to date!

:P

message 125: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments Kaja, is there a setting that covers 51% in A Treacherous Paradise? Could it be Mozambique?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I'm really glad to see us make progress on this.

message 127: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments And I just messed up Colombia for anyone, apologies!

Map and lists will be updated once I finish posting in the completed tasks thread.

message 128: by Karin (last edited Aug 25, 2017 06:10PM) (new)

Karin The Body Electric is set in completely in Malta in the future. This is an island country (has more than one island--an archipelago) in the Mediterranean. I finished it today for 15.3.

message 129: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments Thanks Karin, I have finished my updating for today, but am going to try to update daily from now on in prep for next's season's sub challenge, and through next season so everyone knows where they stand for countries.

Right now I am stopping for lunch between cleaning the rooms of my house. Second weekend of working on it, but when we finish the whole house will be clean and tidy and I can be a bit more focussed and organized.

message 130: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments Map updated!

Anyone else having to constantly review their RG plan because countries keep being read ? Yep, I am focussing on firsts because that looks like my best strategy for points next season.

Another country to change!

message 131: by Coralie (new)

Coralie | 2755 comments My RG plan is already in a complete shambles so I have decided to ditch the idea of reading them alphabetically and just go with whatever is available at the time in the library. I think I should be able to get a few extra firsts that way.

message 132: by Rosemary (last edited Aug 26, 2017 02:36PM) (new)

Rosemary | 4275 comments Not me. I am only trying to fit books I own into the plan, and cover 6 continents. It's just possible I might have one or two firsts, and where I have a choice I'll go for them, but I won't worry if someone else plants their flag on those territories before I get there :)

message 133: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5272 comments My plan so far is a mix of possible firsts and things I own.

message 134: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments I won't be going alphabetical either. I had planned to, but my library books haven't arrived in a way that will allow me to manage that, so I am just aiming for firsts.

Apologies in advance to anyone I upset!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I think I can get about half of my countries as firsts, whether I go in alpha order or read for those before the others. Over half of my choices are library books. I guess I'll have to make up my mind in the next few days.

message 136: by Bea (new)

Bea Ha, Ha, Ha! I will just feel good if I even complete the sub-challenge! I will not be competing for firsts at all. I might try the alphabetical reading, but it will depend greatly on library availability as all my planned books are library books.

message 137: by Karin (last edited Aug 27, 2017 07:23PM) (new)

Karin I am not even planning on doing this as I am totally exhausted doing the Counting game 4 times. At first I was only going to do it 2 or 3 times, but as competition got fiercer and as I was in a big reading mode, I did 4. (call me crazy, and you won't be far off)

That said, I would like to read novels in some interesting countries.

message 138: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 1894 comments I'm going to try for 6 or 7 continents, but I won't be trying hard to be first for a country. I've got a busy fall lined up between my library groups, my lifelong learning groups, and my Goodreads groups, so I'll be doing well just getting the books read in the right months.

message 139: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3095 comments Amanda wrote: "Thanks Tien for messing up my RG plan :P
...

Argh! Tien, you stole another one! "

Oops, sorry! (not sorry) lol

I didn't even plan on Zimbabwe... I didn't even realise the book was set in Zimbabwe!!

I am going alphabetical and I'm going by my plan. I've planned for A to N but will read only 10 depending on the timing of the books (when I get them from the library) and from what I can see in the planning thread only 3 of my countries are in other people's plans so I think I'm good :)

message 140: by Kaja (new)

Kaja | 61 comments Amanda wrote: "Kaja, is there a setting that covers 51% in A Treacherous Paradise? Could it be Mozambique?"

Yes, Mozambique :)

message 141: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments Cat, The Seven Sisters says it is set in Brazil, but reading the summary I can't be sure that it's 51% ?

message 142: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 303 comments Amanda wrote: "Cat, The Seven Sisters says it is set in Brazil, but reading the summary I can't be sure that it's 51% ?"

yes it is :)

I didn't explicitly mention that 'cos I'd thought Brazil had already been taken.

message 143: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments I record the first 3 books for each country, and Brazil only has one, so it gets added!

message 144: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments The List is updated and another country down. I probably won't have time to do the map before the next season starts, but as long as you all don't post too much between now and then the list should be up to date and will be your best resource for first country checking.

message 145: by Rosemary (last edited Aug 30, 2017 03:02PM) (new)

Rosemary | 4275 comments Amanda, I forgot to mention it when I posted the book in Completed Tasks
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
but Forest Dark is set approx 90% in Israel.

Sorry to anyone who was hoping to get Israel in the next subchallenge. I didn't realise it would be so much set there, or I would have saved it for next season myself :(

message 146: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1527 comments Thanks Rosemary, just about to start tonight's update. Might even get around to the map!

(Wasn't supposed to be home tonight as tomorrow Miss 10 turns 11, and because husband works we were to celebrate tonight. Unfortunately she's come down with the nasty flu that is going around, so takeaway Nandos and a night at home it is.)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments I learned of a book this morning that I think might fit Azerbaijan. Ali and Nino: A Love Story - not exclusively in that country, but probably more than 51%. There is no way I'd get to it this season, so from my point of view, it's up for grabs.

message 148: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5272 comments I may give it a try, Elizabeth — thanks!

Darn! I saw once I did it wrong and thought I fixed it!

Edit: Ah, I see, I fixed it one place and not the other.
