I don’t really watch superhero movies. I watched Wonder Woman twice and it was so cool. Plus I loved Leigh Bardugo’s writing so I wanted to try the DC icons series but this is the only superhero I’m familiar with. The other ones will be interesting XD

It started way before our time too, it's not like one can buy golden age comics cheap. I have more to do with my time than research and memorize everything, just so I can argue about Ambush Bug's origin...

I'll admit I haven't even heard of Tiger Lily before but it's now on my TBR because it's sounds really promising (a lot of my reviewer friends have rated it 4 & 5 stars too!) And I can't wait for The Wicked King to come out!

I'd never heard of Tiger Lily but that blurb left me more than intrigued!! I may get it.
@Becca I haven't been feeling very chirpy myself, so I'm taking it slowly. These books are fairly easy to read, and small, or I wouldn't have finished them so easily. I've been mostly reading them during breaks, at cafés and the like... I'm taking more walks, spending more time outside.. I wish the good weather comes soon, it will be good for my health, but also for my spirit, my mood.
I'm not sure if it was ever a thing where you guys live, but when I was little, an animation series was aired named Les Malleurs de Sophie/Sophie's Misfortunes/Os Desastres de Sofia. It's set in France during the 19th century and follows Sophie, her family and friends. Sophie is prone to doing naughty things and getting herself in very unfortunate situations, which can be very annoying - it was to me when I was a little 8-year-old -, but on the 2nd part there were tears, I confess.
I've always wanted to read the 3 books, and finally I've been doing just that! I found used old editions this Summer!

. It introduces one of my young-self's otps, childhood-sweethearts Sophie/Jean, and I don't know if the series misled me, since they made a lot of changes. Hold still, my heart!
@Regsly: You always pick up and talk about the most interesting books! These all sound super gorgeous and lighthearted which is perfect for moody/slumpy reading. I feel like April is such a moody month in general. All the motivation and vigor of the new year has died off - I feel like I always have a depressive bout at this time, even with the good weather here.

In Portugal, April is a rainy month, Spring or no. We have a saying "Abril, águas mil" (April, a thousand waters). But we had a really cold winter, and for the last months, we've had storm after storm - they pass by the United Kingdom, and then the visit us here, since we all share the Greenwich meridian (yay -_-). So I'm still wearing Winter clothes most of the time, it's always gloomy.
This Summer they were talking about our drought, and how some of our rivers were facing the lowest levels, ever. Well, after so much rain and moisture, I hope they've risen up again at least!

@Ilsen: Victorian books are so good when you're in the right mood. When we get back into Shadowhunters let me know - I'll have to borrow it out again. But I'm cruisey whenever. And I'm super keen to pick up Made You Up! I want to read Leah on the Offbeat BUT I am a terrible human and haven't read Simon vs the Homosapiens yet. Should probably do that first.
Anywho, STILL trying to finish Wild Beauty. I've been reading Tyler Johnson Was Here on audio which is super heartbreaking. Also started Black Chuck as an ebook but haven't read much of it yet. Still kinda slumpy, anxiety has been off the freaking charts, and I'm trying to slowly tick off books one by one instead of mood reading so much because it's so daunting when I get into a slump.

More than anything it made me see red. I hate human society.

I think I read The Foxhole Court really fast, all things considered. So I'm taking that as a positive sign.

Yeah I was just reading somones one star review on the first book saying that the sport and the drug use is ridiculous?Still gonna try it out at some point.
Uglies is one of those series that I wonder how good it would be reading it for the first time now. I loved it when I first picked it up because it discussed body image with a dystopian story line. Reading it now, it's very classic early 2000's dystopia - very white, next to no diversity, but nothing overly problematic from memory.

In a dystopian world it's harder to justify, since supposedly certain prejudices we have may not exist in that society? But if a caucasian author doesn't know how to write a person of colour, then maybe they shouldn't. If they're gonna get everything wrong and not do them justice...
This is why it's so hard to balance ownvoices authors and the rest. I feel like everyone deserves a chance at writing, and I feel like everyone has the right to fail. But at the same time, people with the life experiences know better, and letting certain authors continue to spread stereotypes is just a no-no. This is so complicated!
You are so right about playing it safe and not creating potentially harmful/poor rep. It would be so difficult and intimidating to manage all the expectations in the current book community. I feel like it can be a fine line between inclusion and having a token minority in a story. I honestly still think the absolute best answer is sensitivity readers. That way authors can write a diverse range of characters and they get honest opinions of the portrayal prior to publication.

But anyways The Foxhole Court sounds good! I’m interested in it despite mixed reviews. Uglies is not something I’m interested in. I feel like it’s basic dystopian and it’s just not a thing I’m into. I think dystopian is a genre I’m not really fond of anymore. But hopefully I’ll start reading soon!
Also yes ownvoices and not is very complicated. In my opinion, I rather authors just write what they know instead of going to diversity as the new “trend” *cue eye roll* If they can only write white people then let them. Better than to appropriate and just reinforce stereotypes.

I love the dystopia/utopia sub-genre, but not every dystopian work. It was a subject I liked studying in college, its impact on constructions certain cultures built, blabla... But nowadays, it's mostly about YA fighting some tyrannical world, and it may come to make no sense whatsoever at the end, like the Divergent series.
I agree. Although, I think sometimes people just forget that we're all just humans. It depends from country and society, but from hanging out with my friends I just saw regular lives.
If creators sometimes focused on not the colour, but the fact that these are people, with friends, family, interests - just like everyone else... Like... If they just wrote the character thinking of "a person" without the colour connotations. Just like men writers should just write normally when they do female characters, instead of focusing on things that real women really don't perceive that way or care.

@Regsly: I finished that webcomic the other day and it is freaking adorable. Check it out! Since my mental health and sleeping have gone down the crapper I've started being better about my sleep hygiene, which means no technology an hour before sleep. So I've stopped reading so much on my iPad. Kinda been missing the Kobo a bit too.
@Ilsen: Your boyfriend left you notes in a book?! Train mine pretty please? And I know the struggle with library books. I made a set TBR for May today and realized I didn't take into account any of the library books already on my shelf.....

That’s freaking adorable. My boyfriend doesn’t read at all but he’s started picking up free bookmarks for me when he finds them, especially when he goes out of state for work. It melts my heart every time 💕

I'm curious, do magnetic bookmarks leave marks on the pages?
I used to have a magnetic bookmark and don't remember it leaving marks at all. Just that you had be careful because it was easier to accidentally rip a page. Guys, I am so on top of my reading at the moment I don't even understand!!! So I'm only reading two books at the moment, one audio and one ebook. Because I've changed to my ereader and I don't feel as bad taking that to work to use. AND I have a set TBR for May. Am I becoming an organized reader? I don't understand!?
So I'm a little way through The Right Thing to Do at the Time and halfway through Specials (not sure if I'm going to finish rereading this series at the moment...)

Yeah, I mean, they look nice, but I can't use them. They're just sort of become collector items. I do have a collection of bookmarks, so... (have so many free ones that publicize other books halp)
I've been mostly using some origami I did myself, they tuck in the page corner and it's all in peace.
