Ruth Danes | 4 comments Not many of my friends read much either but I think it is because they have small children! Having written that, I think some people just don't get into the habit of picking up a book when they are a child and so they never develop the habit of reading for pleasure.

At the moment, I am reading Darwin's Ghosts by Rebecca Stott. So far, I am enjoying it.

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments I don't have any super bookish friends IRL. Which is the reason why I spend so much time on here or conversing with the book community on Twitter.

I would LOVE to be able to do a buddy read with people IRL but I don't think that's gonna happen for me in the near future.

message 153: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
Oh no I tried doing a buddy read with my friends and one friend is still reading the same book that we started in June XD Most likely I won't do buddy reads with them because it's so hard for them to stick to a schedule because they just read whenever they feel like it XD

But I love talking to all of you guys and doing buddy reads and OMG I want to start City of Glass soon but homework is the death of me.

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
@Eri & Ilsen OMG THE COVER IS OUTRAGEOUSLY AWESOME!!! Can't wait to get inside Leah's head.

I have been telling people, "read the book, because we're watching the film!"

message 155: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Currently reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Unearthed (Unearthed, #1) by Amie Kaufman Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare The Wren Hunt by Mary Watson .

My immediate TBR is insane. I have 5 books that I want to have finished by the end of the month and I don't think that is possible at all....

message 156: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
Omg I was so close to getting Unearthed signed and meeting the authors but I was out of town when they came :( I did see Marie Lu and got Batman and Warcross signed (Just finished Warcross it’s so good!!!

I’m reading Illuminae, Clockwork Angel, and Plague Land. I’m liking Illuminae. Clockwork Angel is being a little slow. Plague Land is ehh. Hoping these would change eventually.

message 157: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Oh I've got Illuminae sitting on my shelf right now! Picked it up from the library yesterday. I feel like it's about time I read it. Haven't even heard of Plague Land haha.

It's taking me a long time to get through Unearthed, I don't know why because I am enjoying it. But for what feels like an action-packed book the pacing is kinda slow.

I'm loving The Wren Hunt though, which is an ARC due to come out at the end of the month.

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
Omg I haven't updated this in forever

The 2 bookaroos (don't throw stale bread at me) currently bouncing on my non-literal knees like spoiled toddlers:

Double Dexter (Dexter, #6) by Jeff Lindsay Double Dexter (I'm about to kill Dex's wife myself)

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare Clockwork Angel

I want to read Illuminae and Fahrenheit 451, but I have so many books... I really need to start reading the ones I do have.
The other books I didn't know!

message 159: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
Plague Land by Alex Scarrow was an ARC that I won through Instagram from Sourcebooks Fire. It wasn’t on my TBR but since I won, I thought I give it a try. So far it hasn’t captured my attention though. Also it was released December 2017 and look what month it is now XD

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
@Ilsen So it's a bit dull for you? xD

message 161: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
@Regsly A little. It’s a post-apocalyptic novel. Like it’s interesting but like nothing is captivating me to keep on going but I want to try though.

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
@Ilsen I get it. Sometimes it's the writing itself, or the characters aren't appealing. Or it just seems like nothing is really going on...

message 163: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
@Regsly I think it’s all of the above XD

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
@Ilsen Oh boy xD

message 165: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments @Regs/Ilsen: This reminds me of my feelings towards some YA dystopia: I love them and find them super interesting but I've read so many of them now that if there is nothing different that distinguishes them I get bored really quickly.

message 166: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
@Becca Yea dystopian is a hit or miss for me! I loved Divergent but I don’t know about any other dystopians. For me, the characters have to be really memorable for me.

@Regsly/Ilsen/Becca

Agree with y'all! I did really love The Hunger Games for example, and although I adored The Maze Runner as well, it was very slow-paced and hard to get through at times :s

I'm currently reading:
Gemina (The Illuminae Files, #2) by Amie Kaufman
:)

message 168: by Marisa (new)

Marisa Poltrack [book whisperer] | 52 comments I am reading the lying game by Ruth ware and also I can’t make this up by Kevin hart.

message 169: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments GUYS I need to read my books faster so I can join you all in reading the Illuminae files D:

@Marisa: How is the Kevin Hart book? I love him on so many things

In other news I finished Fahrenheit 451 and I still love it. Definitely a classic that I rec.

Still reading Scythe (which I am loving) and The Wren Hunt (also loving). Which I was planning on finishing by the end of the month. Also reading Clockwork Angel.

Also planned to finish The Hazel Wood (ARC) by the end of the month but not sure if that is going to happen.

message 170: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Oh and I finished Unearthed too! Great book, 4 stars, review to come.

The ending was great and so keen to see that there is a sequel in the works!

message 171: by Ilsen (new)

I heard great things about Unearthed!! Also The Hazel Wood sounds so good!

Same. It's on my TBR list already. Can't keep up with books from the past and all these recent goodies.

Finished Double Dexter finally.

Moved on to Dexter's Final Cut (Dexter, #7) by Jeff Lindsay Dexter's Final Cut (the title is misleading. It seems like the last book, when it's actually the 2nd to last. Tsk tsk, Mr. Lindsay)

Still reading Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare Clockwork Angel

Started Loveless, Volume 11 by Yun Kouga Loveless, Volume 11 (received this volume for Christmas, I've been following this series since high school ;__; this is one of my 2 sons.)

message 174: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Hello!

So I've finished Scythe (4 stars), The Hazel Wood (4.5 stars I thinkkkk), and Clockwork Angel (3 stars maybe?)

I'm behind on reviews hence the iffy star ratings atm.

Currently reading:

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman ! I am loving this even though I'm only like 50 pages in. I thought I was going to hate the format but I'm actually really loving it!

Always Human by Ari Walkingnorth A new queer webcomic I saw a few people recommending. I'm not minding it, but it's not my favourite at the moment.

Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1) by Seanan McGuire Picked this one up as an audiobook. I have already read the second in the series (DON'T JUDGE ME) and adored it. So far this one is giving me all the same vibes and I'm really enjoying it.

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1) by Holly Black Starting this one tonight as the BOTM buddy read! So keen after hearing so many good reviews about it.

After this lot, I have Clockwork Prince (think I'll finally read a Shadowhunter book in physical copy because the audiobooks are frustrating me) and The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore which is my next ARC.

message 175: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
The Cruel Prince is going to destroy you but it’s really good!! I kinda want to reread it but I literally read it a month ago but it was so good!

I’m still reading Illuminae and Plague Land. Loving Illuminae but ehh on Plague Land but I’ll still give it a shot. My plans are to finish those two, start Wonder Woman and Clockwork Prince this month, and start getting to my library books. I already had to return one of them without reading it because it has been over a month since it was due so I really want to get to them soon.

message 176: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Don’t be scared to DNF! I think I’m going to DNF Being Human - too much romantic fluff for me.

And I feel you with the library book thing. I am hopeless about borrowing books when I have no time to read them

message 177: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
I know I shouldn’t be scared to DNF but like I feel like I should give every book a chance. I really don’t want to DNF. And it’s not terrible. It’s just other books keep getting in the way. The last time I picked it up was when I started it which was the beginning of January XD

Yea and my friends and I went to the library and it was so hard not to pick up anything new because I already have so many borrowed books and books that are just sitting on my shelves. Also my friend lent me Mosquitoland not because she liked it but because she wanted me to rant with her so I’m interested to see how that would go XD

message 178: by Vee (new)

Vee (vee_s) | 6 comments Hello, I'm currently reading Red Queen by Christina Henry. This is the 2nd book, following Alice. I would really recommend Alice, if you are looking for a some fantasy, adventure and a dark twist on a classic tale. It had a great & interesting story!

message 179: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
I heard about the Alice stories by Christina Henry! I’m excited to try them!

I’m still reading Plague Land. Am I ever going to finish this?

message 180: by Cordelianne (new)

Cordelianne | 192 comments Mod
I have been in a huge reading slump and I have no idea why. I already tried reading my old favorites, but that didn't work either.
Which book would you recommend out of these I have unread at home:
-ready player one
-Moxie
-code named verity
-wild

message 181: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
I think Ready Player One and Moxie are good options! It really depends on what you’re in the mood for.

message 182: by Ayla (new)

Ayla (goodreadscomayla) | 655 comments Mod
@Cordelianne @Ilsen

Ready Player One is a great one!
It does start off a bit slow, but that's mostly for the world building part. If you manage to get through till around page 50, the storyline will start to pick up and that was definitely worth it in my opinion! :D
It's really a great novel, but it's reaching the boundaries of your imagination, so be prepared xD

message 183: by Cordelianne (new)

Cordelianne | 192 comments Mod
Okay I will start with that book than, properly tonight. Thanks for the advice!

message 184: by Vee (new)

Vee (vee_s) | 6 comments @Ilsen, yes i woukd really reccomend Alice, it's much darker than I expected but still has magic and adventure! page Turner for me anyway.

message 185: by Susan (new)

Susan (jazzescrapper) | 44 comments I just finished The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and I loved it.

I am going to start 2 books, The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1) by Holly Black and When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

message 186: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
The Outsiders is amazing! I definitely need a reread of that book soon! I also loved The Cruel Prince! That’s a new favorite!

I have When Dimple Met Rishi on my shelf! I definitely have to read that soon!

message 187: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments @Cordelianne: Good luck! I was going to rec Ready Player One as well!

@Veronica: Alice has been on my TBR for so so long. I'm reading a few dark retellings lately, so maybe I should bump this series up my list further.

@Susan: I am loving The Cruel Prince and I adored When Dimple Met Rishi!

message 188: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments @Ilsen, due to your stubbornness about DNFing books, yes you will probably eventually finish that book.

I am currently reading:

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1) by Holly Black : BOTM, loving it so far!

Take Your Medicine by Hannah Carmack : Just started the ARC, the author is super lovely and I am super into the story so far!

Helter Skelter The True Story of the Manson Murders by Vincent Bugliosi : I've had this on my TBR for a while (I'm a true crime nut) and found the audiobook the other night. Not hating it, but also the narrator is quite droney

Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2) by Cassandra Clare : Started the next chapter in the Shadowhunter Chronicles with Ilsen and Regsly! Wasn't a huge fan of the last book but so far this is okay...

Saga, Vol. 8 (Saga, #8) by Brian K. Vaughan : Just read the entire Vol 8 after waiting SO LONG for it. Man, I just freaking love this series.

message 189: by Vee (new)

Vee (vee_s) | 6 comments @Becca(becandbones) yes definitely, I've seen a couple of twisted Alice in wonderland books, but I think this might be the most interesting dark retelling. Oh if you have any suggestions please let me know! I've only really read this and Wicked, in terms of classics with a twist.

message 190: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Oh I vaguely remember Wicked. Not sure if I finished that one.

I read The Hazel Wood recently which I loved. Not strictly a retelling, but loads of dark creepy fairytale stuff.

And Take Your Medicine is another Alice in Wonderland retelling! I’m loving it so far. It comes out in early March. I’ll be sure to let you know what I think at the end!

message 191: by Lou (new)

Lou (aliceinbagend) I'm currently reading quite a lot of books, including:
Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3) by Sarah J. Maas Wonder Woman Warbringer (DC Icons, #1) by Leigh Bardugo Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen and I'm really enjoying them all!

message 192: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
@Becca

I’ll give it another try but if it doesn’t capture my attention I am DNFing I’m sorry I just don’t like DNFing :(

Hopefully will start Wonder Woman today I’m super excited for it!

message 193: by Vee (new)

Vee (vee_s) | 6 comments @Becca, oh I'll have a look into those. Yes please do!

message 194: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments @Ilsen: I admire your ability to give it a real shot :)

@Lydia: I relate to reading lots of books! Haha

@Veronica: I'm about 60% into Take Your Medicine - I flew through so much last night! - but it's less of a fairytale story then I thought. It's more a story with modern characters loosely based on Carrol's characters. I'll make sure I drop a link to my review when I'm done :)

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
You guys read too much stuff I still have to get my reader-hands on!

I just seem to always be reading things that aren't trending as much anymore or things that aren't as well known lmaoooo

So, currently reading:

Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2) by Cassandra Clare (buddy-read going on strong)

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (IN PORTUGUESE WOO-HOO - I gave this to my mother like around 2 years ago)

Dexter's Final Cut (Dexter, #7) by Jeff Lindsay (I really like this cover's graphisms *claps* Idk, it's brilliant in a simple way)

*insert clandestine readings like webcomics, fanfiction and a poem here and a poem there*

And I want to read a bunch of random things, hold me down!! You guys don't know, but I actually have a folder of ebooks and a pile of physical books that I compile as a "wish to read" at the beginning of the year, and then I get derailed because... *starts singing* It all depends on the mood I'm in (anyone remember Jem & the Holograms, the animated series?)

I really wanna start:

- The Tainted Accords by Kelly St. Clare
- All for the Game trilogy by Nora Sakavic
- Vintage (A Ghost Story) by Steve Berman (lgbtqia+ with ghost?? Sign me up)
- and more...

message 196: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
My friend has read The Girl on the Train and I still have yet to read it. Trust me there’s a lot of things I have to read soon. I really have to clean out my TBR though because there’s some books that I’m just not really interested in.

Still reading Plague Land but I successfully started Wonder Woman and I’m really liking it so far!

message 197: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Haha mood reading is a killer!

You really make me wanna go back to reading the Dexter books though!

message 198: by JanEyre9 (new)

JanEyre9 I'm currently listening to the audio of Go Tell It on the Mountain and think I'm going to start reading City of Thieves tonight. I feel bad for any book I read right now though, I just finished The Heart's Invisible Furies and World Without End and both were so great that I feel like anything I read now will pale in comparison. I hope I'm wrong!

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
@Becca Ditto!
I still don't think the Dexter books are anything remarkable in a whole, so I don't really recommend them to people, but they're not terrible xD

@Ilsen I hope your friend liked it. I'm finding it too close to home in that depressive sceptical disillusioned real life mood.

I don't have any of these DC novels, but I'm liking the fact it's bring more people into this world. I hope it's doing Wonder Woman justice, because she is just amazing!

Wait, did I tell you guys my friend has cosplayed Wonder Woman twice now? A more classic version some years ago, and now the film one. I still gotta make a proper photoshoot with her. Alsoooo gotta edit a lot of photos that I still haven't posted. Go me!

message 200: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments @JanEyre9: I haven't read any of those! I've seen The Heart's Invisible Furies around the place but I'm not big on historical fiction personally. And I really need to pick up something by James Baldwin at some point.

@Regsly: That's so cool! I never been big into Marvel but I still love Wonder Woman. Mostly because she reminds me of Xena xD

And I used to be obsessed with the show! Maybe I should just go back to that instead of the books. BUT the books were so much better in my opinion because of the unique way they portray his thoughts.
