I looked this book up on Goodreads when you mentioned it, stumbled into the reviews and HOLY DOOLY. The reaction to this book is a whirlwind.

I can't comment on this book because I haven't read it BUT the one agreement I have is certain books need to have trigger warnings. Just do it, authors/publishers/editors, it's 2 words on your book that will save a lot of backlash and save some people hell.

Becca, the book really needs a trigger warning but hey, I mean if you choose to read such a book, you should be prepared for what's coming

I agree. You reap what you sow. You've made the bed, now lie on it.
I mean, I can't even see the disturbing review that ppl keep quoting anymore, but I certainly wouldn't stop reading a book just because someone said it is harmful or because it had negative effects on some people. I like to reach my own conclusions and deal with the consequences of my choices.

Seriously, there's been so many people who have harmed themselves or others due to works of fiction. Obviously it is related to the individuals themselves and not the fictional works. I've read reviews from people with ARFID, and some with other eating disorders that may have liked the book or not, but who didn't get harmed in any way by it.

I haven't looked at the graphic stuff for a while but I remember there being a fair bit of Marvel and young audience stuff.

It depends what publishers you are requesting books from. Some of the bigger companies only want people who are established as book reviewers via blog/vlogs/etc but there are a lot of publishers that are happy if your a GRs reviewer and you give them feedback.

And was Ruin and Rising good? Yet another YA fantasy series that I have on my TBR.

I love Marvel, I'm even more inclined to create one now and see if there's still stuff like that

Do it. After all this talk I went on and requested a couple of graphic novels, haha.

Also, I started both Firstlife and My Absolute Darling today.

I only listened to the first 15 minutes of Firstlife on audio and I'm intrigued by the dystopian concept but also wary because I noticed that reviews for this have been very opposing. We'll see.

I received an uncorrected proof of My Absolute Darling from the GR giveaway and my gosh it has some stella endorsements already. Only 20 pages in but I'm loving the style and super intrigued where the story line will go.

ALSO, I finished my other ARC, The Temptation of Adam earlier today and if you have the slightest love for YA contempary fiction you MUST read this when it's released (November 2017 from memory). It is amazing once you get into it and I'll be reviewing it tonight when I get off work.

Yeah, the book caught my attention when I saw your reading progress on my feeds. Also, all the questioning of the patriarchy by a male character? That's lovely.

Nowadays people are so into attacking feminism when it is basically humanism: equality for all; and fail to notice that this society puts everyone in boxes and males suffer too.

I just love that it was subtle and not a big deal. There's just lines where one character will pull up another one about saying he's less masculine because of crying and things like that. It is honestly a beautiful book.

I get what you mean. It's not an "essay" on the subject. It's real, just the thoughts or vents a regular person would do.
Some of my male friends feel okay doing that with me, and their side sucks too.

I think that's the thing that got me. It reminds me so much of some of my friends. I live with a gay couple and my best from high school founded a feminist foundation that provides workshops etc to schools. So I've been surrounded by those comments. But to find it written in that real-life way was something that stood out so much to me.

Haha, I should stop gushing, I haven't even got to a review yet. And I mean that's going to be fun. I need to go home and listen to the accompanying album that the author made first (another reason I freaking love this author right now).

Ruin and Rising is so good! I thought it was a very satisfying conclusion! I also finished We Were Liars yesterday and it was amazing! I couldn't put it down! Now I'm going to finally start Strange The Dreamer and catch up with the BOTM and a reread of Black Moon by Romina Russell so I can get caught up with Thirteen Rising (the last book in the series) when it comes out 2 weeks from now

Are the newer Dexter books good? I read the first three in Dexter: An Omnibus and enjoyed them from memory.

Currently reading

City of Bones for our BR as an audiobook

My Absolute Darling still - I was enjoying it but also lost interest, I need to sit down when I have a good amount of time and get back into it because I wanna see where the story goes

Bloody Brisbane: Murder In The River City - oh dear this book is bad; badly written, badly researched (one of the crimes discussed cites one newspaper article.... that's it) BUT I will keep reading it because it's short, they're local stories to where I live, and I want loads of stuff to point out in my scathing review

I'm currently reading:

Strange the Dreamer for BOTM. I'm so behind and it's not because of the schedule. Just with college coming up soon it's stressing me out.

The Upside of Unrequited for BR with Regsly. It's so good. I'm loving it.

City of Bones for BR with Becca, Regsly, and Marta! I just started and while I'm not that far yet because I'm still catching up, I like it!

I wish I could have been in on the BOTM but ended up cancelling my hold because I was never going to get it within the month. Oh well.

I hope the stress eases up for you! Do you have long until you start? It's the getting everything organised and settled at the beginning which is the worst. I'm sure it'll be better once you get into the swing of things.

I found the 4th really good, and I enjoyed the 5th for some reason. But what I really enjoy most in these books is Dexter's humour and sarcasm. I just want to slap BookDeborah too. So I'm not the best person to give an opinion on the Dexter series because I believe I read them for the wrong reasons.

The 1st year is usually the hardest because it's all new and you have to get used to a new pace and way of doing things (also the bureaucracy)... But by the middle of the 2nd semester after the novelty of it all, you'll be cool as ice *thumbs up*

I am sure you will do great. From my experience recreational reading took a hit only depending on my classes - some had more textbook readings than others.

@Regsly

A characters talent in humour and sarcasm is the perfect reason to read a book. **throws the remaining unread Dexter onto my already staggering TBR list**

And yes, this review is gonna be the best bitch-fest-on-flames you've ever seen. Although, I finally reviewed The Wrath and the Dawn and thought I kept it pretty civil. Buuuut while I initially rated it 2 stars, after getting cranky again while writing the review I dropped it to 1 star

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
Lmaoooo yes join me in the Dexter universe, Becca *waves hands like she's a Jahandar*

No spoilers, but there's some changes to the dynamics that I actually find hilarious anyway :P
But the 4th one was really good in the social critique and chosen theme. I believe it had a good critical reception.

Okay, so I finally gave up on that stupid crime book (Bloody Brisbane: Murder In The River City. Review is here is anyone wants to enjoy my frustration. Honestly though - the most badly written piece of writing I have ever attempted to read. It even forced me to a new 'oh-lordy' shelf just for that book.

I'm going to start Windchaser for a book challenge (also because I love Dinotopia and dinosaurs and dear me I WILL have to revisit the show now).

And I started Deep Space Accountant because I was bored at work and it's a free book about an account who lives in space and starts off with them throwing a pig around for sport. Also it has 4+ stars on Goodreads?!

Ah good luck. I've had the box set on my shelf for a long time and really want to get into it but I think I have commitment issues.

I read the first book and a half on a pdf a friend sent me - all 7 books were in a single pdf. And I lost my page. So I haven't gone back since.

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Okay so I'm still reading My Absolute Darling and Deep Space Accountant. I am loving both, they are just both longer books with interesting story lines so I'm taking them slow and enjoying them.

I have just finished City of Bones for our BR (@Regs and @Ilsen I will be over soon to update). So that means City of Ashes will be up next. I'm still debating whether to do this as a hard copy or an audiobook. Leaning towards audio tbh.

And then I have my billion (okay, 6) library books that I need to read. I need to decide between The Reminders, The Silver Linings Playbook, or The Good Luck of Right Now which are due next. I am open to recommendations!

Speaking seriously though, no offence to whoever enjoyed it, but there's just too many problematic issues with the book disguised as romance.

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
@Becca Go for the audiobook if you can, you've been doing really well with COB :)
(unlike me who got sidetracked with REALLY GOOD fanfiction *le gasp*. I'm not even a fan of the canon universe, per se, but the writing is really good. I saw a snippet, next thing I know I was at the fic's page and just couldn't stop binge-reading)

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
Oh yeah.

So I haven't finished Double Dexter yet, I've gotten really sidetracked.
I'm at book #11, Mates, Dates, and Diamond Destiny, so only one book to finish the series and finally close this chapter of my jeunesse.

I'm almost over with City of Bones (almost *cough*). So next is City of Ashes for me too.

Aaand I started Cinder for the botm, but I'm still at chapter 2. Curse you good fanfiction worthy of being on a book (it's better written than many published "literate")

Hoping to use these books for the June Challenge too

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Guys, help.

My currently reading list is starting to snowball again

So I'm still reading;
My Absolute Darling (it's actually frustrating that I haven't had much solid reading time because I really want to get back into this and finish it - the writing is, honest to god, magnificent)
Deep Space Accountant
Start Here: Read Your Way Into 25 Amazing Authors (only half counting this book because it's background reading)

But then I also started:
Ballad for a Mad Girl (because I felt due for a new ARC - and this one so far is great!)
The Silver Linings Playbook (because library books - I've run out of renewals for some of these guys and need to get them dooooone)
Code Name Verity (because I never read amazing YA books when everybody is raving about them and I found this as an audio while waiting to start my buddy read and omg why didn't I read this sooner, for reals)

And then I am also starting City of Ashes tonight as a buddy read because I need to not get behind even though I have become distracted by SO MANY OTHER BOOKS.

Why do I do this myself?

Someone please send assistance.
