I am looking for a trilogy ( I think) - might only be two books.

Main character is attending a school where he cant seem to get the hang of magic

stranger walks in, who in the past had saved him from being killing by the locals when he had used a different kind of illegal magic

he runs away with his best friend who turns out to be royal

after they ran away the entire school got killed in their sleep besides one girl who got turned into a shadow of some sort and ends up in a dilemma about helping underground shadows in a sidestory

main character and his friend crosses a boarder into another country following some kind of compass - saves a guy from a prison gang - this guy cant remember anything about his own life - he turns out to be very powerful and isnt sure if he is good or evil

something about a court scene in this new country before going back

ends up in a strange place - centuries before the story takes place, where the main character had left clues for himself.

hope someone can help - annoys me to no end that I cant find this series
