Scene in 'crypt(?)' where two women kill each other

All I remember from this book is a scene where two women kill each other in a 'crypt', cellar(?). This was a gothic novel I think. But that is all I remember of it. Ring any bells for anyone?
I am reading a ghost story and for some reason I remembered this.

Maybe it also contains a scene where one of the children are locked a room? Prisoner due to mental illness?
