Do you think Dustfinger the Adderhead and all the other characters where there before or made up?

Well, I see your point, but I rather think, they got their history invented when Fenoglio wrote "Inkheart". When an author writes about a charcter or a world, (s)he already has an idea, about the characters future, and in this case more importantly, their past. So although, the characters think they´ve existed since forever, they needed Fenoglios words to become "real".
