May's challenge

May's TMS challenge is to read a book by or about and person who identifies as LGBTQA. This is an opportunity to practice our inclusive feminism by shedding light on yet another demographic fighting the good fight based on sexual identity. The book choice can be either fiction or non-fiction, and again: if you think it fits the category, then it fits. Please share your book choices and recommendations with the group. Go forth and diversify!

I'm going the memoir route. I just picked up Honor Girl: A Graphic Memoir & Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More from the library.

Random recommendation in fiction: George, about a trans girl in grade school. (Also written by someone who identifies of LGBTQA+)

This prompt is great because I have been actively looking to read more books by LGBTQ authors. I look forward to seeing what other people choose to read.

I second Emmeline. Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is fabulous, as is Alison Bechdel's second memoir, Are You My Mother?. I also really liked Calling Dr. Laura by Nicole Georges.

I've accidentally read a few books recently with side characters who are LGBTQIA, but I can't really say that that counts for this challenge. Instead, I will point to my long list of to-read and read books from Dreamspinner Press.

Also, did you know that BookBub has the option to have deals in various genres, including LGBT+, emailed to you daily? I have found a few gems this way...

This one actually isn't a challenge for me...I think maybe 5 books I've read this year have NOT had LGBT protagonists!

I decided to go ahead and finish Kai Ashante Wilson's The Sorcerer of the Wildeeps. It was really impressive, although I liked A Taste of Honey better. That said, I find it sort of... annoying when the book is described as containing "an LGBT romance" because then I feel like far too often, LGBT just means gay (with a bi male character as the only possible variation). But maybe that's just me.

If anyone's looking for a last-minute selection, Every Heart a Doorway fits the bill (with an asexual protagonist) and is a fast read.
