message 1: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm currently reading Soul Music: A Novel of Discworld, which I'd meant to get to in April.

I'm also sort of stalled out on The Power: A Berkeley Blackfriars Novel, and am debating about whether to DNF it after (view spoiler)

message 2: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments oh fuck. That's deserving of a DNF.

I'm thinking so. Especially since I wasn't exactly loving it even before then.

I just haven't decided what else to pick up in its stead, yet.

message 4: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I'm reading:

Mo' Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove - for a challenge. It's good but I realize I don't care and it's going to be a DNF.

She Wolf and Cub - so far, weird but ok interesting

Castle of Wizardry - cause I read it every year

The Collapsing Empire - this should not be my thing. It has political shenanigans but I'm LOVING it so far. O_O

message 5: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I just started a re-read of Fool's Assassin, in preparation for the release of the third book later this month.

I don't know what it is about Hobb, but I just absolutely friggen love her. No matter how many times I read through all of the Farseer / Fool / Liveship / Dragon books (and I've read them all multiple times), I always get the same wonderful feeling when I'm reading them. My heart feels full, and I can taste each and every word and emotion... LOL! That sounds ridiculous and cheesy, but so accurate. No other author / series makes me feel like this. The plot is overall so bittersweet, and sometimes down right heart breaking, but in such a beautiful way. I love it.

Anywho... I'm happy to be re-reading. Looking forward to all of the wonderfulness that is to come, and dreading the heartbreak. But also looking forward to the heartbreak. It's a sickness.

I read book 1. I agree she's a fabulous writer but damn I can't deal with the torture she puts her characters through.

message 7: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I feel ya. But for me, it doesn't feel like she is putting them through torture. It just feels like the characters are real and I'm allowed to get to know them, and all of their good and bad moments as well. My heart hurts for them, and I think the degree to which it does so is one of the reasons I love the books so much. That they can make me feel so deeply is amazing, and all of the super low moments just make the happy moments even more powerful.

message 8: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments That's fabulous.

message 9: by Sinistmer (new)

Sinistmer | 212 comments I just finished Lilith's Brood. I really enjoyed it, but also started to feel a bit overwhelmed by the end. So many thoughts. I haven't decided what novel to read next...

message 10: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I just started (as in a few minutes ago) reading Written in Red. This is my first non-university, non-required reading selection since February.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I'm working on For We Are Many on audio and Promise of Blood in ebook, both careovers from April.

message 12: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Back around mid-April I put 7 books on hold.

Every single one of them has come in except the one I need for the group read, 'Death Watch'.

I just think that's funny...

***

I officially dumped 'The Power, and picked up Storm Thief as my gym read.

Still slowly getting through 'Soul Music'... I was sort of sucked into a Harry Potter podcast talking about how awful 'Cursed Child' was, and that took away some of my reading time...

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments I finished Spook's Dark Assassin a few days ago and picked up Shadowcaster (Shattered Realms, #2), which I'm enjoying (as I knew I would). Also started my ARC of The Lost Causes yesterday, and it seems pretty cool so far.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I just finished up re-reads of Written in Red and Murder of Crows.

I'm working on a re-read of Perilous Dreams and a 2nd 2017 Guardians of the West.

I just finished up the Sci-Fi book of the month, Behind the Throne which I really enjoyed!

message 19: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I'm almost through All the Birds in the Sky, and next I'll be moving on to Death Watch, which I finally got from my library.

Sinistmer | 212 comments I am working my way through Behind the Throne, the Sci-Fi book of the month as well. It's very fun! I stayed up way to late reading it. :)

IDK when I'll get Death Watch - Had to do an inter-library loan.

I also have Astrophysics for People in a Hurry on hold: I'm #6 of 9.

The book is $13 right now. I might try and buy it if I can get my budget together. #6 of 9 means that it could be around 4.5 months before I get my hands on it.

I feel that's a very true statement Chris. I'm nearly at 50% for Memories of Ice.

MrsJoseph are you rereading The Others books to be prepared to read the last book in the series Etched in Bone?

message 24: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 31 comments Death Shall Come A Country House Murder Mystery by Simon R. Green - Yay! Good book. Will definitely go back to read the other books in the series.

Struggling with Sorcerer to the Crown. I want to edit out 1/3 of the words. I think I'll try to speed read this while exercising tomorrow. It's not a long book. I should be able to do it.

Halfway done with audio of The Star Dwellers (The Dwellers, #2) by David Estes and enjoying it. David Estes is a good YA writer.

Tackling my Review Pile and started: Ascension by N.J. Tanger
Some of the descriptions are a little hazy but it's going head first into events. Exciting!

I can't wait for the Malice thread. I read the book last month and curious to see what people will think of it. =)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Chris - have you head the newest Hobb trilogy yet? Specifically Fool's Assassin?

message 26: by Nyssa (last edited May 12, 2017 04:34AM) (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Nyssa wrote: "I just started (as in a few minutes ago) reading Written in Red. This is my first non-university, non-required reading selection since February."

I completed Written in Red a few days ago, then I reread Midnight Riot (aka Rivers of London), and I am now reading Murder of Crows.

I think switching between both series will allow for processing time, and help to prevent series burn out.

I'm about a quarter of the way through Murder of Crows; I can't wait to see whats coming...

I haven't yet. Those are the only ones I haven't.

Hello Soo.

Please edit your post to show the name of the book, and not just the cover. Covers are hard to read, especially on tablets and mobile devices.

Thank you.

Yes, I'm trying to get there, lol! I've only read books 1 & 2 so I did a re-read to push myself a little farther in the series. I;m hoping to get to Etched in Bone before the final book comes out.

message 35: by Thaddeus (new)

Thaddeus White | 69 comments I've only ever heard of DNF in racing terms. Interesting. And, yes, that spoiler does sound like it doesn't so much stretch incredulity as snap it.

I am still on Journeys, because I read incredibly slowly (disclaimer, I have a short story in the anthology). Most entries are good, and one or two are great.

message 36: by Damien (new)

Damien Black | 6 comments Peter V Brett's #2 Demon Cycle book... I love the way he has tapped into frontier America for his northern lands and the Islamic Middle East for his southlands... I don't dare say if that was a deliberately political choice, but it makes for very compelling world-building I must say!

message 37: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments Right now I'm reading:

King of the Murgos (2nd re-read of 2017)
Vision in Silver - just started
Perilous Dreams - about 1/2 finished

Queued up:
A Nameless Witch
After the Crown (sequel to Behind the Throne - this month's BotM)
--Death Watch -- waiting for library

message 38: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Now I've moved on to Behind the Throne and on audiobook I'm listening to The Pagan Lord

I finished Murder of Crows on Sunday. I loved two of the new characters that were introduced, and I am hoping to see them again.

I am now rereading Moon Over Soho. IT is going slowly, just like last time. I originally thought it was me, but now I'm wondering if the writing is to blame. I was really expecting to be further along than I am.

I guess I'll see how it goes.

I have the latest book to read at some point.

Finally finished Memories of Ice Really enjoyed it. Now I can concentrate on Promise of Blood which I was meant to start reading as buddy read earlier this month.

message 42: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments The past few days, I've been reading various manga and Go Ask Alice for the first time. The writing feels inauthentic (unsurprisingly, I guess) and the excessive use of exclamation points is oddly rage-inducing.

message 43: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) | 63 comments Hi folks! I haven't been reading as much as I would like the last couple of years, but now that I have a break from big life events (for now), I'm hoping to get back to it.

I'm listening to The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet on Audible & I'm really enjoying it. I'm actually choosing to listen to it over my podcasts, which wasn't happening with The Girl with All the Gifts. I was trying to push through Girl because so many people love it, but it just didn't hook me so I dropped it.

I'm also reading Stardust which is a fun read so far.

message 44: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I thought GWAtG was kind of overrated.

message 45: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I ditched 'Death Watch', and breezed through Love, Lies and Spies, which was fun and frothy and I think just the escape I needed.

Next up is Pirate King, I think. Or possibly Moonkind.

message 46: by Angela (last edited May 28, 2017 09:36PM) (new)

Angela | 41 comments Finished Promise of Blood which I liked. I never really connected with any of the characters though, and felt it was more the magic system that held my interest vs anything else.

I'm now reading Red Seas Under Red Skies as a buddy read.

message 47: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments Currently focusing on The Apprentice's Quest (Warriors: A Vision of Shadows, #1), and continuing A Crown of Swords (Wheel of Time, #7) again. Though I like the Wheel of Time series, I think it'll probably take me the next eight years just to finish it all!

message 48: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I've been having a pretty good reading month.

In the past two weeks, I finished Moon Over Soho, and then read both Vision in Silver, and Whispers Under Ground.

I'm currently about 80% through Marked in Flesh, and I will probably start Broken Homes at some point tomorrow.
