Chapter One – The Interview
Indu looked at the brown clock that hung on the wall opposite to where she sat. It was close to 5 PM. She nervously looked around the room at the other candidates who had come for the interview. They were all dressed well. Some of them were in formals while some in saree. Indu looked at her own clothes and it made her feel insecure and embarrassed. She was in a casual black shirt and a long skirt with floral prints all over it. The skirt did a good job of hiding her black open shoe which barely had any heels and it seemed the soles would come off anytime. She didn’t have any accessories on her except for a fancy pair of red earring studs and a bangle made of red beads, both of which she had got from a recent fair. Indu felt out of place and she wondered if attending the interview was a good idea.

The candidates were seated in a large corridor outside a conference room. To their left was the entrance to the conference room and to their right was the entrance to the corridor where they were waiting. The walls and ceiling were painted in white and the space above the pair of the wooden doors, on either side of the corridor, were painted in orange. The brown clock hung on the white wall and right below it was a small wooden table with fresh orange Gerbera Daisies in a white flower vase. The floor was covered with tiles in a shade of ivory and even though the room was well lit, there weren’t any windows and the centralized air condition was the only source of ventilation.

Only a few more candidates were left but Indu will be the last person to be interviewed since she turned up late. It was her first interview and she did not know what to expect or what to say. She was so nervous that at times she felt that she would faint. Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard footsteps and everyone in the room looked towards the entrance to their right. Indu’s gaze followed the sounds of the footsteps and she saw a tall young man entering the corridor. He was dressed in a formal blue suit and everyone in the room stood up on seeing him. He looked at the candidates and smiled at them as he walked past them to the conference room where the interview was going on.

Indu thought that he looked smart, well built and very handsome but she didn’t know who he was. Nevertheless she had stood up as the other’s did and smiled back at him when he looked towards her. As he entered the conference room, she sat down and asked one of the candidates sitting next to her as to who he was.

“That’s Mr. Vikram Kumar,” the girl next to her said.
Indu looked at her blankly and she sensed that Indu had no clue who he was. “We are being interviewed for the post of his personal assistant.”

“Oh! Okay. He is the CEO then?” Indu asked.
The other girl nodded and smiled at her.

After some time Vikram walked out of the conference room. Indu and rest of the candidates stood up on seeing him and this time Indu made sure that she gave him a confident smile as he walked past her and left the corridor.

Indu took a deep breath and sat down. She nervously waited for her turn and finally she was the only one left. She kept staring at the clock as the seconds needle kept ticking away. She gasped when the door opened and the previous candidate walked out. Indu kept looking towards the door of the conference room when a man appeared and called for her using his hand. He was the same man who had been calling the candidates, one after the other, the whole day. She took a deep breath and hurried towards him.

“What is your name?” he asked.
“Indumathi.”
The man checked the paper in his hand and then said, “Your name is not in the list.”......
