How is your reading as compared to last year. What are your 5 star books.

Last year, I thought that there were so many good books, but at the end I didn't have many 5 star books.

This year which almost doesn't seem to have as good of choices of new books may just seem that way to me as I already have 5 , 5 star books:

We Were the Lucky Ones We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter
Consider This, Senora Consider This, Senora by Harriet Doerr
Exit West Exit West by Mohsin Hamid
Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal Kitchens of the Great Midwest
Etta and Otto and Russell and James Etta and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper

I have quite a few strong 4 star ratings as well.

I have been impatiently waiting for my hold on the audio of Exit West to come in. You would think such a short book would move quickly but it hasn't. I'd like to try Consider This, Senora but it's not available in either Kindle or audio so will probably not get around to it.

Consider This, Senora is another one my SLQ doesn't have as an option to recommend. That's on Overdrive, but I will look on Wheelers as I saw a whole lot of new books that had been advised to me by Allen and Unwin on my email news feed.

message 5: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Moseley | 717 comments I couldn't recommend for purchase, Exit West, but could for How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia.

Denizen (den13) | 566 comments I went back and looked through my books read this year and found 3 I had rated 5.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch Hillbilly Elegy A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance and In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner

message 7: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) Like BnB, I hardly had any 5 star reads last year but have already had 5 this year:
Consider This, Senora
Golden Hill
Baba Dunja's Last Love
Swing Time
Autumn

I'm looking forward to Exit West.

message 8: by Blueberry (last edited May 01, 2017 09:34AM) (new)

Blueberry (blueberry1) These are my 5 star books for 2017. They seem to fall into two categories. Those that I felt they were 5 star maybe because I couldn't put them down while reading and those that a few months later are still WOW, that was a good, thought-provoking book.
Those in the second category were:
A Man Called Ove
A Place Called Winter
The Dog Stars even though I gave it 4 stars.

The first category of 5 stars were:
Me Before YouMe Before You
Another Man's Moccasins
Anna and the Swallow Man
People of the Book
Irena's Children: The Extraordinary Story of the Woman Who Saved 2,500 Children from the Warsaw Ghetto

I can't even get this one to register on any of the catalogues. Thanks . Nor 'Swing Time' EBOOK. Won't complain as I don't pay for so many wonderful EBOOKS.

Lesley Moseley | 717 comments This years 5 stars reads :

Possession by A.S. Byatt ( re-read)
The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt
The Radiant Way by Margaret Drabble (re-read)

I can't find any others. What is the best way to find one's 5 star books ?

A lot of them were in April, along with The Kitchen House and Death Without Company. I had a really good month.

Do you have a 2017 Reading Challenge set up? Scroll down on your home page to find your challenge on the left side and click on "XX books completed". It shows the covers of the books you've completed this year. Sort by rating (on the right above the books). Your 5 star books will be listed first. I discovered that if I wait about a minute, the book description and my rating appear when I hover the cursor over the book covers.

Hope that helps.

No, I haven't tried that. Thanks . Off to 'Mindfulness Workshop', then Reading at school, then Flying doctor for flu shots.. WHEW.

message 19: by Karin (last edited May 02, 2017 06:04PM) (new)

Karin So far these are the books that are either a full 5 stars or rounded up from a strong 4.5 or so (at least one was a surprise).

Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe rounded up. re-read

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty rounded up-totally surprised at my enjoyment of this

Republic Of Dirt A Return to Woefield Farm (Woefield, #2) by Susan Juby rounded up

Dear Enemy (Daddy-Long-Legs, #2) by Jean Webster re-read (liked it better the second time when I wasn't expecting it to be like Daddy Long legs)

Improving Your Serve by Charles R. Swindoll

Dying Out Loud No Guilt in Life, No Fear in Death by Shawn Smucker rounded up,( this was a surprise as I only expected it to be a 3)

You can rank them by rating under my books, but then it's no longer by date read, so you have to go through all of your 5 star reads to find all of the ones from this year.

I agree! I also wish we could to shelf searches, and then do one with two shelves as we were able to do with tags on Shelfari.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. I have had so few migraines in my life that I can tell about each one, and know how horrendous they are. Can you still read with them, or is it the whole dark room with cucumbers slices on your eyes? (English remedy .)

For most of my life I've been able to read with them once the whole eye thing is done (when I get that). However when I was a preteen and teen, I couldn't read for about 3 days even when I could see again. The were at their worst then for the most symptoms.

message 29: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) The 100 YO Man was so much fun! The movie is pretty good too.

message 30: by Blueberry (new)

Blueberry (blueberry1) I actually wish I hadn't seen the movie. It followed the movie for the first half and then went all crazy changing the storyline that it blurred the book storyline for me, which was soo much better.

message 31: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) I guess I saw it quite a while after I read the book so didn't notice the differences so much. I think they would have had to make a mini-series to get it all in. Anyway, I'm happy you enjoyed the book.

message 32: by Blueberry (new)

Blueberry (blueberry1) Oh, a miniseries would have been awesome! The story would have been so easily broken into segments also.

message 33: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) Here are my 5 star reads for 2017:

The Essex Serpent Dazzlingly imaginative
Baba Dunja's Last Love An old lady moves back to Chernobyl to live out her last days...
Exit West Found his storytelling voice very immediate and unique
Consider This, Señora Atmospheric...the feeling from the story lingered for days after I finished. Thanks Fran!
To The Bright Edge of the World Magic
Autumn I loved the characters and the way this story was told so much

Two of yours are on mine, Exit West and Consider This, Senora. To the Bright Edge of the World was on mine last year.

I might use the one of the others to finish up my year. Baba Dunja is on my TBR.

message 35: by Story (new)

Story (storyheart) I think you'll enjoy it, BnB.

message 36: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Moseley | 717 comments So far, The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry seems to be the most common favourite.
