Very excited to read this one! - Can't wait to finish up the book I'm on now. teehee!
Tbh, I'm not excited about this as I normally don't like spiritual metaphysical whatever type books. I couldn't finish The Elegance of the Hedgehog, for example. But then, I love The Little Prince so I'm hoping Martel can expand my horizons!
This has been in my collection for YEARS so I'm glad it won the vote! I started it a couple of years ago but only for a few pages in before I gave up. Hopefully I feel differently this time!!Still trying to finish Little Women before I start this months books... how did I get so far behind??
A friend recommended this book so I read it a few years ago. I have to say it's not one that I would have selected on my own but I did enjoy it. More than I thought I would.
Can't join in with this one as I only read it in March but will be inetersted in what everyone thinks - I really enjoyed it and would read it again if I hadn't banned myself from re reads of books within 5 years !

I started this one several years ago but didn't get very far before quitting, although I don't remember why I gave up on it. Got a copy today, and I'm excited to get started.
I ordered this book from Amazon and it arrived...filled with a high school girl's comments and definitions. It's like having a whole extra experience to this read! Any drama - side bar, "WHOA!" Any upset comment - side bar, ":(".
I was very moved by this novel! But when I read other reviews, I saw the variety of responses. I liked it a lot. Anyway.
I've had this on my list for years. Glad to have this motivation to finally dig into it.
I'm looking forward to reading this but also a bit nervous as it's not normally my type of book.Despite that, I still added it to my to-read a long time ago, mainly because it was popular and I felt I should read it (looks like I needed this group a long time ago!!)
However I can't read more than 1 book at once, and I'm currently reading the 3rd Hunger Games book, so once I've finished that I'll start on this!

I listened to the audio for this book years ago, and loved it! Not just the story, but the actual reading of the story as well. Unfortunately, I can't find where I put those CDs, but I have the physical book I can finally crack open. I'm hoping I'll still hear the audio book reader's voice in my mind while reading it. :)
This may be a no-no, but the movie based on this book was beautifully done....

I don't think this is a spoiler. This book is far more intense than I expected and is lightly philosphical. I'm glad we picked this one. :)
I don't really know what to expect from this book. I haven't watched the movie adaptation yet either. All I know about it is as far as descriptions of the book go, like the one here on goodreads. I've noticed the book is included among "most weird books ever" list beside mostly postmodern works but this isn't a postmodern book (or is it?).
I read this book many years ago - shortly after it was released I believe. I did enjoy it but I don't recall the details very well. Why does this happen? If we love a book why can't we remember it?I may not re-read it - still trying to finish Little Women and 2 other books.

Page 444, my goal is to finish today so that I can read Life of Pi. I am being bad today..... I took off of work just to read. Don't judge me! Lol

:P lol I know, that's horrible, but since it's done I'm enjoying it instead of feeling guilty as I started to do this morning!

Lol"If it happens to me, I try to compensate by thinking that reading adds to my collective knowledge, exercises my comprehension and leads me to habit of reading and learning generally (science and non-fiction books), so that I don't feel guilty :)
The extend one's mind goes to relieve him of guilt! haha!
Lol, Lee, I love it and will live by it! The past 6 weeks have been the hardest weeks of the school year and I had a personal day left to use, so I grabbed at the chance for a break!
I read this book awhile back. I recall feeling like it was slow going, but worth it in the end. I won't be re-reading, but it is a good selection. I look forward to the spoilers discussion.

I wanted to spend a good chunk of the day reading but this book is not sucking me in. It's not bad, just kind of slow and I'm not aching to know what happens next. How's it going for everyone else who is reading this?

I still had the old bookmark where I had stopped reading this book 3 years ago. I picked it up again for this book club read. I remember it was really boring at parts. My strategy is to read at least 10 pages a day (my copy has 310~ pages) which sounds manageable even when I'm facing a very boring part. I am also reading 3 other books, so this daily goal helps in making progress in all of them at the same time....
I enjoy how he describes actions and memories, not much philosophy. Given that I watched the movie, I know it's going to be a tough read going further.
I am listening to the audiobook and enjoying it so far. Playing it while working on a puzzle or doing the dishes helps to get through the boring parts! I'm about 20% through.

Courtney, I've been meaning to give audiobooks a chance. I've avoided it so far, as I usually don't take things in as well when they are read aloud to me. Listening while doing a puzzle sounds so delightful!! 4 cats make puzzles a challenge at my house lol. They like to "help." I'll pick up a random audiobook from the library soon and give it a chance, thanks for the idea!
Just started this one today and I can already tell it's going to be a tough one to get through. I really loved the movie so I hope the book picks up pace soon
I finished The Sun Also Rises so I can start reading this book alongside my studies.
Same. I'm only a couple of chapters in so can't tell how I'm going to feel about it yet. I like that it's going to be something completely different from The Sun Also Rises though and good to give something I wouldn't normally go for a try!
Emma and Hannah: I'm only about 1/4 of the way through this and I feel as though it's starting to pick up. All that "back story" at the beginning that felt a bit over the top at times to me is starting to become very interesting.
Heather, same here. The religion exploration became interesting and now that I'm 100 pages in it's picking up!

The back-story is what I love about the Life of Pi...the explanation of how the character's name came about...the visuals of the pie-shaped teacher...the responsibilities at the zoo...all create interesting images of the first part of the life of this little fellow...
I read this back in 2010 and loved it then so I think it will be great to read it for a second time now.
Ulya, the zoo defense did stick out in my mind. I definitely felt like it was an attempt to defend zoos from the mouth of someone who fully supports them and doesn't like when people bash them. I still don't know that any man can vouch for how these wild animals feel about it. The territory stuff makes sense, but I feel the size of their enclosures and having to be near people (some of which have ill intent) all of the time might be negative factors. Just like big dogs need a good sized backyard and walks for proper exercise, I feel a wild animal needs more space to romp. But like you, maybe my good intentioned feelings are inaccurate. This is something I've actually been thinking about a lot because I'm taking my class to the zoo on Monday and zoo trips sometimes make me feel sad! I hope the author was right and that these animals are content. I also hope the caretakers at the zoo don't ever abuse any of the animals out of frustration or resentment towards something about their jobs. If a zoo takes in animals that have been injured and can't survive in the wild, I'm all about that!
I'm only a few chapters in but struggling a bit as it's quite wordy with not much action, I'm hoping it gets better!
