multi-series book, maybe fantasy, scene with man getting kidnapped in a port city by a magic guild?

I forget all the details about this book, but I know it was a multi-series book, maybe fantasy, for YA audience, published recently (in the last five years).

There is a scene in one of the middle books in the series when the main guy and the main girl go into a city from a boat to try and get some information. He returns to the boat and gets kidnapped and the girl is really angry and has to rescue him.

There is a power imbalance between the two of them—the boy is often hunted (maybe because he has magic? And the people who kidnap him are part of a magical guild in this city they are visiting and try to suck his magic out of him??).

I don't remember much else. Help would be great!

Can you tell us more about the hero and heroine - their ages, how they meet, jobs/skills/powers/backgrounds, etc.?

Kris-- I'm afraid I don't remember at all!

I remembered that the boy gets kidnapped by a group of "dark mages." They are not legal but maybe turned out to be endorsed by the legal magical guilds? And is there maybe a woman organizing his kidnapping who wants to steal his powers?

I think this was book 2 or 3 in the series.
