SamuraiKitty | 155 comments Still one of my very favorite "scenes" from the books - the roof top race. I think it's just amazing.

SamuraiKitty | 155 comments Hi Giki - I agree! But I love the little details - the little girls in the dormitory: shrieking, giggling, hiding under the sheets, the old ladies auburn wig, the maids kicking their heels and passing them sausage on a stick and a bottle of wine, etc. And how in that moment Robin Stewart forgets himself and just "is".

It's a really long time ago (like 25 years) that I went to Dorothy Dunnett book signing here in the US, where the race across the rooftops was one of the readings she shared. I hadn't read the books yet (I attended with a friend who swore I would love them.) so while everyone else was charmed and delighted, I was scratching my head as to why there was a donkey on the roof. X-D

DD in person is how I picture Lymmond's mother. She had snapping blue eyes, a great rolling Scot's accent, and a presence that filled the room. Every single person there felt "a little touch of" DD that night, I'm sure.

:-) how interesting. I would imagine her to be 'very Edinburgh'
