Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Donna, it was okay. I liked that I learned quite a bit about the Maya... but the characters were pretty dry, and it was hard to really like them. I also felt like I was being taught about the culture like a teacher would tell a third grader. I ended up giving it three stars because I felt like I learned a lot, but I don't know... It wasn't a great book, but I don't want to be too harsh on it - after all, the last several books I've read have all been really, really good. On the other hand, it does feel good to have that pesky X out of the way! :)

What were your thoughts about the book?

Donna (dfiggz) | 3119 comments Mod
Kinda the same. I know a lot about the Maya since I am facinated by them so I found myself understanding it very easily but as you said, I couls care less about the characters, they had no personalitiies so to speak. It was just OK. I too gave it 3 stars that was really because I liked the whole Maya part.

Jenni, what did you think of Sarah's Key?

Lauren, I want to read Shutter Island but it always seems like my TBR grows and grows. What are your thoughts on it? Is it worth pushing up the list? Or can it wait?

Donna, Sarah's Key was AWESOME! I was so absorbed in it, that I managed to read it in one day. That's pretty good for me! :) I imagine that it'll be one of my favorites of 2010. You should read it, let Mt. TBR grow a little more!

I'm awesoMEGAN! (missesmh) | 161 comments Started reading One Second After. Pretty good so far. I actually started reading it last night before I went to sleep and dozzed off dropping the big hardcover book on my face - lol.

I have read it a few months back and although I liked Sarah's whole story I felt that it got too personal with whats-her-face. The story was great without her.

Another reason I hate hardcovers! Nothin' like getting a black eye from a book LOL

I love how the book says "vintage" when it was first published in 2005 LOL

message 363: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments Ashley, let me know what you think of Never Let Me Go. I read it awhile back, and enjoyed it. I'd say more now, but I don't want to spoil anything...

message 364: by [deleted user] (new)

I also enjoyed Catching Fire. A good read.

Now I am on The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall.

I have had The Hunger Games and Catching Fire on my shelf at home for like ever but I have yet to get to it. It seems that I am apart of too many bookclubs (can that be so?). I will get to it soon enough. I am guessing before March!

I fifnished up on The Fourth Hand by John Irving and now, as I said 100 times< I am going to start The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths.

message 366: by [deleted user] (new)

The Suzanne Collins books read extremely fast if that is any help. They really suck you in if you like that sort of stuff. I haven't heard of The Crossing Places...

Just finished it! I cheated a little and read reviews to find out what it was about before I read the whole thing, and now I wish I hadn't... but I still enjoyed it :) To anyone who wants to read it, don't do what I did, just read it and I think you will get the most out of it that way.

Now starting Her Fearful Symmetry

message 371: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished The Raw Shark Texts this weekend. It had me completely captured cover to cover.

Now I have started The Road to Wellville. I like the beginning thus far.

You inspired me to add The Raw Shark Texts on my TBR! It does sound pretty interesting and now that you confirmed it I may just get to it.

I love books that do that! I wish every book I picked up drew me in like that

message 375: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm on a pretty good run right now. If I were a betting man, I would say the next 2 or 3 books I read will be 4 or 5 stars given what I know about them and reviews from people I know. I'll be really surprised if I don't love the Safran Foer.

I liked Eating Animals but I wouldn't say it was a 5 starer.

message 378: by [deleted user] (new)

Ah, but you see, I read Eating Animals last month (and changed my diet accordingly). I am finally going to read Everything Is Illuminated. Over 2 years after loving to death its predecessor.

But your next 3 ought to be great. Especially since you really liked Shadow of the Wind. And I love Russo!

message 379: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 3119 comments Mod
Well hopefully we will read Russo together.

I am just slacking so much in reading. Not because it's not good because it is it's just that my husband and friend have been taking the train with me in the moring and I just haven't read much. I try to read at night when the kiddies are sleeping but I have been so tired. I will read more at work tho LOL

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments I bought my coworker The Help for Christmas... she's reading it now, and is going to let me read it when she's done. :) She says that it's really good.

LOL! Jenni, it's always good to buy people books that you want to read, too. My daughter gave me The Help for Christmas out of a list of books I gave her to choose from because that's the one she wanted to read, too, after I was finished.

A co-worker got me One Hundred Years of Solitude for CHristmas but I already have it (I didn't read it yet tho) but I thought that was a great gift. I secretly returned it and brought City of Bones and Olive Kitteridge: A Novel in Stories

I'm awesoMEGAN! (missesmh) | 161 comments I started reading Tithe this morning. I am up to page 69 and so far only 1 faerie sighting. I don't think I like the main character too much yet. I am hoping it gets better. All it is so far is drinking and cigarettes and shop lifting - lol.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 300 comments Donna, to get back to you on The Help, I absolutely loved it! Just a fantastic book! I've now gone on to Four Spirits: A Novel by Sena Jeter Naslund to continue the theme of civil rights (or lack of them) in the 1960's.

I am def going to get The Help I hear such good things about it. It may take me some time to get to it though. I also recommended it to my Work Book club and They made it the April read so I don't want to read it too far in advance. So maybe March?

message 394: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 339 comments I'm buying the ebook of The Help this week... maybe even today! :)

message 399: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) Donn, the book Truly, Madly is just okay. I mean, its a fun, fluff, chick lit type of book. The writing is a bit weak and truth be told had I not gotten it from GR for free I don't think I would have even known about this book. Apparently its going to be a series.

As for Her Fearful Symmetry, I'm really hoping to start it this weekend. Should be a good read.

message 400: by [deleted user] (new)

Seriously, The Hunger Games only take a couple of days to read. Well worth it!
