Mill on the Floss is a semi-biographical novel by George Eliot. Many characters in the book are driven from Eliot’s own family circle and Maggie Tulliver partially resembles Eliot herself. The strong sibling attachment, which is one of the main themes of the story, is derived from the similar attachment Eliot entertained with her brother. Eliot and her brother were estranged following her living in relationship with the George Henry Lewes, who was a married man; and it is said that this estrangement affected Eliot deeply.
