Js700 | 107 comments Magic book for children.

The boy passes a test at school. The administrator at the magic school comes to his home to notify him. She dismayed by the state of the house, but happy at the clean kitchen. It turns out the boy cleanse the kitchen and that's why it is clean.

He goes to the magic school but isn't allowed to leave (it's a good place though). He promised a neighbor though that he would help clean out his house/garage/store or something on christmas eve. He goes to do so, but gets in trouble because he wasn't supposed to leave the campus.

Read recently, or at least in the last 5 years.

A long shot - Midnight for Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo?

Js700, what special powers or skills does the boy possess?

Js700 | 107 comments Thanks Kris, but it's definitely not the Charlie Bone.

I don't remember about the powers, just that he got really good results on a test that was administered in school.

I think it was set in England...

Js700 | 107 comments I'm also remembering that the social worker person comes to his house because she has to check everyone in the school and he was absent. The teachers don't like the kid and try and tell the woman that he is a trouble maker. I think a teacher looses $20 and blames it on the kid because he is poor.

Children's, or YA? Does the boy have parents? Who does he live with? Remember the cover? Is it set in the present?

Js700 | 107 comments I think it was maybe more children's than YA, but it was a longish chapter book.

The boy has a dysfunctional mother (who doesn't clean or look after the boy very well) and there is no mention of the dad. He lives with the mum (falling down house, very dirty) but he does all the cleaning and looks after her. The social-worker/magic-people-scout comes to talk to the mother and they sit in the kitchen where the boy has made tea.

I don't remember the cover. It's set in the present!
