Her armor was weighing her down, so she shed it, knowing that if she didn't reach the portal in time it wouldn't matter whether she was defenseless.
She felt naked... vulnerable... exposed.... everything she was trying to avoid on this critical mission through a foreign city where THEY could be watching at any given moment.
It is her debut in "La grande viande", the restaurant she always dreamt of opening since she was 11.
She had been working as executive assistant in a Fortune 500 company, but now at the age of 41, 30 years after the seed of her dream had been planted, she finally dared to leave her job.
She boarded a plane with her one way ticket to Paris and a backpack that contains her only possessions.
The idea of building a home with her own two hands, a home she could pass on to her children, was a lovely one.
But now, she was beginning to worry about what kind of mother she's going to be with only 3 months to go until she became one.
She could almost hear the words her own mother used as a constant reminder during her youth, "I am your mother, I am not your friend."
Yet her time had come despite her family connections, and the city had chosen her as the seasonal sacrifice.
Would she be mutton stew or lamb roast; haggis or lamb chops; or simply yet another sacrifice to the God of Rain, Tralenahk?
So many dreams shattered, so many wishes unfulfilled, so delicious a life that will now be served as a summer dish to Tralenahk, the God of Rain.
As the legend says, only the chosen warrior could survive the rigors of the sacrificial ceremony, a feat none has accomplished.
And suddenly, as if triggered by her shout, out of nowhere, there it appeared before her (which was a good thing, too, seeing that time was running out 25 posts previously): the portal!
But a portal to where, she wondered. Then she hesitated, as time was running out, whether she would go through it or not...
She was stuck...in time and space, waiting to see if it would send her to a new world or simply leave her here in this dried up husk of a land.
And she couldn't help but wonder by what folly the beauty had all faded before she had ever chance to see it.
Her inner voice was telling her to touch the luminous rock, and just as her hand reached out for it, a voice pierced her subconscious shouting, "Stop!"
Or at least, she thought it was her subconscious, until she turned around and saw him standing there; she wasn't sure if she was thrilled or pissed.
She has seen this person before; a dream perhaps, at a training conference, or perhaps in another life.
When he saw her, he started walking in her direction, smiling, so she had to pretend to be delighted that he was dedicating a few minutes of his so busy schedule to her.
"I'd rather not," she said, while looking for a way out of this place, she can't waste any more time.
"Oh, but we had so much fun last time." he says with a lascivious wink, which comes as a complete surprise to her.
"Of course I remember - last time you ended up with the book and I ended up at the bottom of the Charlestown well for 36 hours. Play? No thanks."
"Ah, yes, it was such a tempting book that I could not resist. I especially enjoyed your notes. How exactly did you relate to the peanut-pilfering mouse?"

To start us off...
Eleven blocks was a long way to run, but there was so much traffic and time was running out.
