SOLVED. Book about crazy inventor father who moves his family to a remote island. [s]

So the book is written from the perspective of a little/teenaged boy about him, his mother, sister, and father. I'm pretty sure the book starts out with them all living on a farm where the eccentric/crazy father invents tons of things. At some point the father uproots the whole family and brings them to a remote island or something remote and amazon-ian . From there the father basically invents and engineers and entire "mini city' where the family lives, including a massive generator (I'm not sure how he accrued all the parts, there could be a plane crash somewhere or maybe not). Eventually they live there for a while until the dad goes crazy and blows up the entire establishment he had built. ended with the mom, son, and daughter running away with the dad chasing them and the mom ends up killing the dad
