I think most readers expect a writer at the least to match the quality of his/her previous works. I don't envy writers who have a wildly successful first novel.

that is tough, but still it's a job, right? ^_- i rather think that as a self-published author, one has got to be as productive if not more.

I think themes get exhausted and longish series are likely to deteriorate...
