Alternating between SF & F sounds good to me. By next May, I may be ready to read a F series.I just suggest doing both, because I thought that there were many people who only wanted to read the F series. For myself I just want to read The Expanse right now.
So when ARE we planning to start? I need to opened up my TBR pile and line up the book requests at the library. Silviana suggested mid-July I think?
I'm game for whatever the group wants to do! I have the first book loaded on my kindle and school's out in a week so then I'll really have time to dive in to the series :)
I pulled the first book off my shelf and placed my book mark at the first page, then I started reading I Robot instead. I figured as long as I start by July 1, I should by able to keep up with the 6 weeks per book.I got the first 3 in the series as paperbacks for a Christmas present.

Should be done with the Walt Longmire novel by the time I need to start. Still conflicted a tad due to watching The Expanse on SyFy.
Have the entire series in ebook loaded on my phone/tablet and the first three in audio on my mp3 player. Wanted to wait till this week or next to start so I don't get too far ahead. :)
All right. Dang it! I got started early on Leviathan Wakes. About halfway through. And now, despite my reluctance to watch the SyFy series and read the books at the same time, I have to admit that I'm hooked. So: "Lay on, Macduff, And damn'd be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!'"
Just got started on this. I was ready to get started a few days ago but filled in some time by reading a couple of Asimov books instead.

I'll always encourage people to increase their book collections. :D
I started on audio on my way home from work last night. And then promptly left my mp3 player on my bed side table this morning. Bah.
Kathi wrote: "Still debating treating myself to the eBooks."If you are tied to the idea of a digital copy, then suit yourself. If you don't mind settling for a (possibly used) printed copy of any of the books, then I would suggest checking out half.com.

I shopped a couple places for used copies (I often buy used books) but was having trouble finding all of them. Will check out half.com. Thanks!

Ended up buying all that are out in paperback at Amazon, new. With free Prime shipping, they were about the same as used with shipping, and with my accumulated gift cards, they were "free". So I'm in.
There is a problem with having seen the show first. I am always comparing the descriptions in the book to what I remember from the show. There are a couple of characters that I don't remember from the show, but then it was a long time ago that I seen the first episode. It would have also been impossible to find actors that match belter characteristics. Not many actors more then 2 m tall.
Are we okay with spoilers in this discussion at this early stage, i.e., the first day in July? If so, I will comment on the idea of differences between the characters on the SyFy series and those in the book. Let me know. Do we have a discussion moderator or are we on our own? :)
I'll be moderating! Hold your horses :) If the mods can set up the folder for us, I will start the discussion threads. I'm starting the book tonight!
We should probably do it in a thread specific to the book as this was just the thread discussing starting a new series.

Hi, all. I'll set up the Expanse folder later this morning/early afternoon when I do the beginning-of-month group posts and folders. Shel - Shall I mark the read and discussion as starting "Now" or mid-month? I will default to "Now" and change the info if I hear otherwise. :)
Now, please :) I think we decided on six weeks for each book, since they're so long, so the discussion will go through Aug. 15.
Everyone - I'm not going to close this thread, because there is a lot of useful discussion regarding other series and such. But for discussion of the current series, the Expanse, please direct questions and comments to the general/welcome thread in the newly-opened Expanse discussion folder.Enjoy the read and the discussion, and many thanks to Shel for leading!

I'm happy to do six weeks; that gives us more leeway to fit them in.
