I read this book more than a decade ago, the cove had the head of a white wolf with a girl in the background.

The story starts with a lady leaving her cottage/cabin home I think.

Basically the plot is a Prince wanted to get married but he said he would only marry someone who was his 'equal' in every way. When his courtiers brought princesses from other places the prince would reject them on the basis of not being as rich as he or as smart as he or as handsome.

Then one rainy night when they had given up hope, in walked a beautiful young lady. The prince looked at her and declared her the most beautiful thing he had every seen. "so you are pretty enough' he said, but you will need to be my equal in both wealth and knowledge. she then asked him if he had everything he wanted. He said of course not he wanted more land, another palace, jewels and such so she said she was richer than he for she had everything she wanted.

Then she said some profound things of which I forgot and the Prince declared he had found his equal and would marry her. But she said no, and pointed out that because of some things he said she was richer, and what not than him so he was not her equal. And to be her equal he was to go and live in a cabin in the woods (I guess - isolated area basically) for a year or some time frame I forget the details and then he would be equal to her and they could marry.

Well he goes to the cabin and finds a wolf and a goat there and at first he treats them badly but then realizes he need them to survive and so he learns to live with them and they teach him to be kind and humble and stuff.

Then he returns to his kingdom and the princess has improved it and is kind and she is in the kitchen cooking for the builders who are building some homes or something but she is cooking and he leads the goat down and he just stays at the door quietly. then the princess notices him and he says he still is not her equal all he has is a goat that's not even his so he leaves the goat and starts to go away when the princess stops him.

And then they get married - the end.

Well at least that's how I remember it.
