I read this about 15 years ago. It features a journalist who is still grieving for her kidnapped baby son many years later. She received a note stating that the sender knows where he is but this is a lie designed to lure her into his hands as he wants to silence her for some reason (I cannot remember why) With help from another man she finally locates her son, now in his teens in America. She and her son share the same rare condition of synesthesia where one can 'see' notes of music in colour or feel them.

Where does the journalist live? Is she married, does she have any other kids? Does she find her son at the conclusion of the book, or earlier? Author female or male? Remember the cover?
Thanks for your reply Lobster Girl. I think maybe she lived in an apartment over an antique business. Am almost sure the author was female. I recall it was a hardback. She finds her son at the conclusion of the book living happily in America with the family he thinks are his. Regards, Jennifer.
I've been looking for this book for years. The woman who kidnapped him was someone she knew. In the end she says he can stay with his new family, if she is introduced as an old friend and can visit him.

The kidnapper was a neighbour who was going back to America the day after she kidnapped the baby. I think it happened while the mother was at a petrol station and yes, that is the right ending. Lets hope we get a breakthrough one day.

I have a feeling that the word 'woods' could appear in the title but may be wrong. It was a library book - hardback.
Does anything in this "Best Synesthesia Books" list look familiar? https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...

Thanks for your interest Kris. Sadly the book in question does not appear on the list. Still, maybe one day. I'll keep checking.
Who and where is the father of her son?
Is there romance? Can you tell us about the man who help her find her son - e.g., his job, how they met?
Definite about these points:
- The heroine is a journalist/reporter (or could that be the author's profession)?
- The baby boy was kidnapped at a petrol/gas station?
Anyone murdered in the story?

No one is murdered. I can remember that she is in danger after responding to the note she receives. Can't remember at which point the new man in her life who joins in her quest enters the story or who he is. I think it ends in a romance. I recall her as a journalist. If I'm wrong about that she obviously has a job where she has been in the public eye enough to bring her to the attention of the man who wishes to kill her. I can't remember why. I believes he lives in a secluded country house. She is divorced from the father of her son and I feel that he may have withdrawn from the situation because he can't cope with false hope. The book was a hardback library book and may have had a picture of woodland on the front. After this period of time its hard to recall all the facts. I think she was musical. The synesthesia in relation to musical notes crops up a few times. When she was at the petrol station she left the car unlocked while she went to pay. Unknown to her the American woman who took the child was also there and took him on the spur of the moment as she longed for a child.
The Slaughterhouse maybe? I can't find any further info beyond the blurb, so it may not be the book, but just in case.
Ayshe wrote: "The Slaughterhouse maybe? I can't find any further info beyond the blurb, so it may not be the book, but just in case." Thank you Ayshe for bothering to make contact. Sadly it isn't the book I'm looking for. I'm going to give it a bump whn I find out how to do it.

By default all threads are sorted by "last activity". So if no one has commented in it for long time, thread goes down the list and it becomes less likely that someone who has read your book will notice it. The preferred next bump period is after 30 days (or sooner if you remember more information).

Kym wrote: "A long shot - Where's My Baby? by Elizabeth Ergas?"Thank you Kym for bothering to reply. Sadly it isn't the book in question. I'll keep bumping it every few weeks.
HiI read a book called "Cry no More" by Linda Howard. Very Similar story line if I remember. Baby son stolen , years later she is no longer with the dad when she gets either a note or a visit from someone with some information and she ends up teaming up with some ex soldier/mercenary type that she later falls for (I think, it's been a couple of years years since I read it). Here is the Synopsis on Amazon if it helps. I know it ends with her deciding to leave the boy with the family he has grown up with.
"On a sultry afternoon in a small dusty village, Milla Boone faces every parent's nightmare. Two assailants kidnap her six-week-old son, leaving Milla in a pool of blood. For ten years Milla's resolve to find her son never wavers. Returning to the scene of the crime, Milla begins to piece together not only her son's fate, but the fate of countless other children who have disappeared in to what appears to be an elaborate and highly lucrative baby smuggling ring. Cautiously, she joins forces with James Diaz, a dangerous stranger with his own agenda, a man who is as untrusting as he is untrustworthy. As Milla's search for her son intensifies, along with a growing desire for Diaz, the quest becomes more treacherous."

Thanks so much for your reply Debbie. Sadly not the one. He was taken from the back of her car at a petrol station by an American woman. The book you mention looks interesting though. Maybe sometime. But thank you again.
You're Welcome, it was a bit of a long shot but you never know. The only other book that I can think of is "Taken" by Niamh O'Connor. Not sure how to add a link here but synopsis sounds similar to what you are describing...
"It's a cold wet winter night when a car pulls into a service station on Dublin quays. Strapped on to the back-seat is a three-year-old boy. Asleep. Five minutes later he's gone – kidnapped in the time it's taken his mother to pay for her petrol. "
Hope you eventually find the book.

Thanks again Debbie and El but have explored that possibility as well. Also I've thrown every word I can think of that relates to a child kidnapping into Google with no luck. I shall keep bumping in hope though. It is so great to receive comments from other members of this group.
Kris wrote: "What's the location - England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland? Big city, small town, highway?"Hi Kris, location is England.
Is this part of a British detective series? If so, can you describe the male/female investigator?
Kris wrote: "Is this part of a British detective series? If so, can you describe the male/female investigator?"No, not part of a series. I don't think the man who helped the woman trace her son was a PI. Just someone who she became involved with - maybe a journalist. One of the earliest replies in response to my post was from Sue who said she had been looking for the same book for years. I've racked my brains to squeeze some more info. but have failed but thank you all involved with this site for your help in keeping our requests current.
When does the reader find out the woman has synesthesia? Does she use the condition to help her find her son?
Hi Tab. Quite early in the story. At the end when she discovers where her son is (in America) she recognises the synesthesia in him. He is about 14 then I think. Thank you so much for your interest.
Juels wrote: "Maybe Forgotten by Nicole Trope?"Thanks for your interest Juels. Unfortunately not it. The story is set in UK. Great to know that people are reading my post though.
Jennifer, I added plot details to the topic header/title. This might help someone to recognize your book faster. Feel free to edit it using the desktop website (not the mobile app).
