I'm still really curious about Vika's parents. I was hoping for more information about that especially now that some of the old magical beings are coming back.

I was really disappointed in Nicolai in this book. I know it wasn't completely his fault as his mother's dark energy was infecting him but to try to kill Pasha and even hurt Vika so many times. Shame on you.

I really hate Nicolai's mother. I can understand where she was coming from but honestly if she truly loved him she would not have come back. She made a mess of his life from day one.

I felt so bad for Pasha is this book. He was so lost and felt so bad. He lost Nicolai, his parents, any feelings that Vika might have had for him and also had Yulianna's influencing him and not always for the better.

Vika too was also really pitiful in this book. Caught between her duty/slavery to the crown and her love for Nicolai. I really disliked how the bracelet forced her to do things she didn't want to and how for a week Pasha wouldn't let her do magic.

I was really glad that Nicolai was able to heal Vika at the end and that everything was pretty nicely resolved. :) (hide spoiler)]

I feel bad for Pasha, because he was really only doing what he had to. Sure, he coiuldve attempted to find a solution, but his parents just died, of course he wasn't thinking straight. And now Vikas blaming him (hide spoiler)]

I feel bad for Nikolai too, his mothers really a piece of work. Hopefully he finally comes to his senses and doesn't get executed, although I kind of hope that's where the story goes. I kind of want Vika to get free from Pasha and his sister, and then live her own life (hide spoiler)]

He could have just spent as long as possible with them and then and let the game naturally end and until then use both of them for whatever he needs for the crown. (hide spoiler)]

Letting everyone get attached, and then eventually leaving one to die just would've made things worse. Besides, Nikolai made the decision to essentially die, by attempting to kill himself for Vika. I don't know, it just felt like Pasha did what he could, especially in the state of grief, and random revelations being dropped on him. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ That all felt a bit too convenient. Like, hip hip hooray, a thousand people are dead in a failed coup, but at least Nikolai's pardoned? No, one of the leaders of a coup, regardless of their friendship with the king does not get pardoned, or at least not right away. And then everyone just started making friends because Vika got her hand blown off? Everythings ok then? I don't know, it just fell together a bit too perfectly.

I'm also kind of disappointed that Baba Yaga and the catfish king didn't play a bigger part. When we learned that they were rising, I honestly expected that to be the main focus, and Nikolai and Vika to have to work together to stop them. While that may have been the more stereotypical plot, I might've enjoyed it a bit better than the constant mooning that this one in. Seriously, how many times did I have to read about Pasha and Nikolai thinking about Vika, especially when there are bigger problems around.

(view spoiler)[I think they decided to pardon him because he was under the influence of dark magic and wouldn't normally have done anything like that. But yeah it is a little weird that they just accept him and forget what he tried to do.

Yeah it would have been really cool if they were also part of the story. I think it would have been harder to include all of them tho because the story takes place only in the capital and the creatures are on the edges of the country.
