William | 1 comments I had this book in the 90s, I was quite young back then so I have fragmented memories of it.
The book is about a boy, possibly an orphan who is sent to live with his cruel uncle.
The book has a few black and white drawings scattered throughout.
I remember a drawing of the cruel uncle watching the boy coming to live with him.
It must have been set in England as the characters drawn had those old English hats and black coats.
The boy was later on a ship. I remember a drawing of him cleaning the deck and the bucket fell over spilling water. It was a gloomy reading.

There's a pic of him scrubbing the deck at the end of Chapter XI in this version:

Though, of course, you could have had an edition with different illustrations.

The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis - David's suggestion

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5379 comments No way it's The Magician's Nephew. Digory already lived with his uncle, he wasn't an orphan, and there's nothing about a ship.
