Sharadha Jayaraman (jayaras) | 1795 comments A popular Wodehouse but some of our firsts :-)

Blurb:
Who can forget our beloved gentleman's personal gentleman, Jeeves, who ever comes to the rescue when the hapless Bertie Wooster falls into trouble. My Man Jeeves is sure to please anyone with a taste for pithy buffoonery, moronic misunderstandings, gaffes, and aristocratic slapstick.

Contents:
"Leave It to Jeeves"
"Jeeves and the Unbidden Guest"
"Jeeves and the Hard-boiled Egg"
"Absent Treatment"
"Helping Freddie"
"Rallying Round Old George"
"Doing Clarence a Bit of Good"
"The Aunt and the Sluggard"

Sharadha Jayaraman (jayaras) | 1795 comments Finished chapter 1, 'Leave it to Jeeves', and whoosh, what a start. Pretty humorous, I concede, and well-written too. 'Leave it to Jeeves' almost feels like a catch-phrase now and I hope that Wodehouse takes the liberty of using it generously in the upcoming chapters.

Liked the characterisation of Bertie and Corky too. Uncle and Muriel not as much.

Somehow feel that Jeeves and Bertie are a comic Sherlock and Watson pair ;-)

Will probably pick up the second one tonight too.

Any thoughts, Manju and Kru?

Wow. Enjoy! Bertie Jeeves duo is one of my favorite literary couple.

Rebecca | 878 comments Bertie Jeeves duo rocks! Hope all of you have a long lasting relationship with them. Have read this. Would have joined otherwise.

Awww :-) I'm getting this feeling that I'm going to cherish them too <3.

There are some 15 odd books in the series, right?

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
Didn't exactly count , but there are quite a few, and they appear in many other Wodehouse collections too.

I am yet to start.

Hahaha me too! xD

I'm done with Chapter 2, and onto Chapter 3, will write my thoughts on them both together as there isn't much in Chapter 2 to really say.

Second this, I'm halfway through chapter 3 and it's sort of Chp. 1 meets Chp. 2 lol.

Completed Chap 2. Not a great one for me and with both of you liking it, I was speculating it turns up better. But now :-(

Sharadha Jayaraman (jayaras) | 1795 comments Done with Chapters 2 & 3, and I'm slightly unimpressed at this moment to resume with Chapter 4 at all. Guess first time's the charm holds true :-(

What I liked about Chapter 3 is (view spoiler) and what I didn't like about it was its abrupt drop in pace compared to Chapters 1 & 2. The humour quotient is also tending towards repetition at this point and I'm seriously hoping that 4 has more originality to it in terms of plot, supporting characters, and humour.

So far, chapter-wise ratings are:
Chapter 1: 4/5
Chapter 2: 3/5
Chapter 3: 2/5

Has Manju started yet? What about Gorab? Sure he'd want to binge read short stories after finishing his tome hehe (congrats, G)

Hello Sharadha, Lis, Kru et al!
Started this yesterday night, and read a couple of them.

Why the deuce he uses this phrase instead of ... ahem ahem....
Also stiff Bs and Ss. Couldn't decipher it... dismissed as BS!

Its amusing, alright. But slightly overhyped I feel.... Or may be feels good once you get familiar with Jeeves and Bertie?

"Leave It to Jeeves" - Promising start. Didn't know these are individual stories.
By the way, this is my second book by PGW. The first one being Thank You, Jeeves read a couple of years back...

Anybody else read other PGW or is it the first one?

He he he :D Thx S.
Yup this looks fast and fun.

Rebecca | 878 comments Actually this is not the best of Jeeves. I think it was an okayish 3 star for me. But there are some which are hilarious. Don't write off them..

Couldn't decipher Bs and Ss - google says bachelors and spinsters which doesn't fit or does it?

Yep, why the deuce, deucedly, etc. is old English for, ahem ahem xD I read the phrase first in Jane Eyre, Mr. Rochester fancied the word too much, so am used to it haha.

Stiff b.-and-s. is short for Brandy and Soda (strong), a drink had in those times. Some even say that it may mean Bourbon and Soda although the English don't have as much Bourbon as Brandy. There's a recipe and Jeeves reference in this article for more info.

Mention of Rochester takes me back to Jane Eyre...

First one for me, although I'm not terribly impressed with all the stories, not sure why these are so popular? Maybe there is some underlying meaning thing which I'm not able to appreciate hmm...

So chronologically, this is the first book which introduces Jeeves?
Asking since I see a mention that Jeeves was previously employed with Lord so and so....

How do you recommend Thank You, Jeeves, Gorab?

message 34: by Gorab, TheGunman (new) - rated it 2 stars

Gorab (itsgorab) | 3765 comments Mod
Thank You, Jeeves was a good funny book. Not over the top funny but okayish. More of a situational comedy. Liked it overall.

As Resh mentioned, not going to write him off even if I don't find this one very impressive either.

I was wondering the same... What does Bertie do for a living? Or pay Jeeves, for that matter? In fact, in all the short stories I've read, no one seems to be doing any work other than getting grants and remittances from uncles or fathers lol :-))

Sharadha Jayaraman (jayaras) | 1795 comments Lis wrote: "Has anyone read the fourth Chapter?"

*raises hand*

Thought it a little sexist and non(?)-required, I mean (view spoiler). Sorry for being a sour sport but I really don't see a point of adding this chapter in. I liked the ending though, with the epitaph and everything, that was catchy :-D So again, 2 stars for me. Humour was upgraded here (view spoiler). What did you think, Lis?

Exactly.. I had the same question..

Sharadha Jayaraman (jayaras) | 1795 comments Some jarring ALL-CAPS questions after Chp. 5 & 6:

(view spoiler)

Feel like I need to backup with the order of the books in case I've missed a huge chunk of events somewhere in between?

Chp. 5 rating - 1.5/5
Chp. 6 rating - 1.5/5

Rebecca | 878 comments I remember loving Jeeves in the offing and Stiff upper lip Jeeves. Do try these if at all you are thinking of a next Wodehouse read.

"Absent Treatment" - 1
"Helping Freddie" - 0
"Rallying Round Old George" - 1
