Devorah (chilazon) | 19 comments I read a young adult book years ago (probably from 2008 - 2012).
The title was something like "2011" or "2021" or "2051".

The main character was an American teenaged boy and something of a loner. America was at war with China. There was a Chinese girl who was on the American side who he fell in love with. Everyone ostracized the boy because of this. I don't remember much except for a scene when they kissed. They had just won a fight against someone and they suddenly fell down in the grass and kissed each other and realised they were in love. It was nighttime. I remember it because I was pretty young and I had never read a kiss like that before.
I think at the end the two of them left the rebellion group they were part of and went off on their own. ETA: Or maybe the boy went on his own without the girl because something happened to her.

ETA: it had a dark tone and a dark cover -- I think with the night sky on it.

Sorry it's not much information. Hope someone can find it!

Devorah (chilazon) | 19 comments Edit: when I saw this book cover, I thought this was it, but it wasn't. This might give an idea of the book cover I am looking for:

(Can anyone tell me how to add an actual picture to this post, and not just a link?)

Angela | 625 comments The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch? From Publishers Weekly:

"Although it relies on some increasingly common dystopian tropes, Hirsch's debut novel is an impressive story with strong characters. A generation after China released a weaponized plague on the U.S., the nation is in ruins, and 15-year-old Stephen wanders the country as a scavenger. Shortly after Stephen's grandfather dies, his father has an accident crossing a river and is incapacitated. Stephen finds himself at the small village of Settler's Landing, where a group of survivors have created an isolated haven of sorts, a far cry from the life Stephen is used to. While there, he meets Jenny, a girl of Chinese descent who is ostracized because of her race. Even as Stephen worries about his father's fate (and his own), he begins to fall for Jenny, and they are both drawn into the horrors of their world, sometimes through their own miscalculated actions. Hirsch delivers a tight, well-crafted story, and although the world-building is light on detail regarding the global cataclysm and its aftermath, most readers will be able to accept the hand-waving and enjoy the action and danger. Ages 12–up. (Sept.) --Staff (Reviewed July 4, 2011) (Publishers Weekly, vol 258, issue 27, p)"

P.S. You can add a picture to your post by clicking "add book/author." Search for the title of the book. All the way down at the bottom of the window will be a section called Add with two bubbles: link and cover. Click the bubble for "cover." Then find the book in the results that matches what you were looking for and click "Add." Goodreads will insert an image of the cover into your post.

Hope that helps! Let me know if anything was confusing. I can be bad at explaining things at times. :)
