SOLVED. Sci-Fi - world where when you die you wake up in a different scenario. [s]

I read this book in the late '80s. One of my stepfather's books - he was a big fan of Heinlein. The story is told from a guy's point of view; somehow he's on a primitive planet/world (like hunter-gatherer) and he tries to kill himself, but wakes up in a different part of the world. When he realizes this, he keeps "killing" himself and ending up in different scenarios.

Maybe the Riverworld series? The first book is To Your Scattered Bodies Go published in 1971.

I've not read it myself, but my husband loves the series and has talked about it extensively.

I have been trying to figure this out for years and only recently discovered this group. It has stuck with me for 30 years, so it definitely made an impact.
