The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon
344 pages
This book was recommended as one of the top 10 books of the year for high school students. Also, several teacher friends have read it and loved it.
"Local Teen Accepts Destiny, Agrees to Become a Doctor, Stereotype"
She starts the book with a chapter titled Daniel, so I can assume it will be told from multiple points of view--or at least two points of view (like Legend). The first line reads like a newspaper headline, so I get a sense of sarcasm and rebellion against expectations put upon Daniel.

Gregor the Overlander
Suzanne Collins
311 pages
A friend recommended it.
"Gregor had pressed his forehead against the screen for so long, he cold feel a pattern of tiny checks above his eyebrow."
The author opens with the main characters name which makes me assume that this book will be in 3rd person. When she describes the tiny checks in his eyebrows from the screen it makes me think that this book will be very descriptive.

Divergent
Veronica Roth
487 pages
I wanted to read this book because I liked the movie and I heard it was good.
"There is one mirror in my house." This quote left me feeling confused why there is only one mirror in her entire house. She has four people in her family and they all have to share one mirror, that's crazy.

The Hit
Melvin Burgess
293 pages

I picked this book because it had an interesting synopsis, which is that there is a drug that gets you the ultimate high for a week, and then you die. The first sentence was, " With Jimmy, it was all about the fans." After reading this sentence I had no reaction. I assumed Jimmy was a musician or celebrity.

Messenger of fear by Michael Grant
260 pages
The cover of the book caught my eye it's was mysterious.
"My eyes opened"
I was interested because maybe he or she would be born or just coming out of a surgery or something. Also I felt creepy because maybe the person was awakened abruptly.

The obsidian blade
Pete Hautman
I read the back of the the book and it drew me in and it also has a cool cover.
"The first time his father disappeared, Tucker Feye had only turned thirteen."
From that first sentence, I inferred that Tucker Feye is the protagonist. That first sentence saying that his father disappeared is trying to draw you in to the book, and it did for me.

Beast
Ally Kennen
217 pages.
The book seemed interesting to me.
"Here is a list of the ten worst things I have done"
This sentence instantly told me that the main character and that the story will be interesting. When I read further in the book, I found that this person has done some very bad things, which means that he is a protaginist and antagonist.

Dentons Little Deathdate
By: Lance Rubin
368 Pages
I chose this book because the cover looked very interesting and it was a winner of the ILA young adult book award.
The first line is, "I don't think this is my bed." This quote kind of starts of the story with a small element of mystery because we aren't sure where the character is and it may play an important role in the story.

Soccernomics
Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski

I picked this book because I play soccer and the name of this book stood out to me. "Not long ago, the data department at a very big English club carried out a study of Corner Kicks." When I read this I was thinking that this book was going to be like a soccer by the numbers book. I think that this is cool and I want to see some of the different things that they analyze and do with these stats.

End of Watch by Stephen King
429 pages
I chose this book because I had seen many people reading and recommending books from Stephen King so I wanted to give it a shot at reading one of them.
"It's always the darkest before dawn"
The first sentence caught my attention but not as much as I would have liked it to. But since the first line was vague it made me want to keep going and see where this story was headed.

All the Bright Places
378 pages
I picked this book because one of my teachers in 8th grade talked about it and said it's really good. "Is today a good day to die?" Is the very first sentence of my book. Right away I can tell there are different point of Beira because at the top of the page it says "Finch". I can also tell it's probably going to be a sad book because the fist sentence is about dying.

A War of Gifts
126 pages
I picked this book because it is short and I like the cover of it.
"Zeek Morgan sat attentively on the front row of the little sanctuary of the Church of the Pure Christ in Eden, North Carolina." (Card pg 1)
The first sentence of this book wasn't really exiting for me. When I first read I thought this book was going to be boring.

Eduardo Padilla | 8 comments The fault in our stars

I watched the movie and many people said that the book was better. "Late in the winter of my seventeenth year, my mother decided I was depressed". The author starts out with a sad point of you and not many books start of by saying that there kid is depressed. The sentence seems important because her mother thinks that her child is in pain and she wants help her out and work with her to feel better.

Ashfall
Mike Mullin
I picked this book because it is a suspense type of book, and I really like suspensful books. Also because it seems really interesting and exciting.
"I was home alone on that Friday evening"
I feel like something bad is going to happen because the way the author says the first sentence sounds really sad and simple and the next sentence is "Only those who survived know what friday evening I'm talking about"

Fade
Lisa McMann
248 pgs.
I picked this book because I read the first one (Wake by Lisa McMann) and I was instantly captivated by it so I decided to go one with the series
"January 1, 2006, 1:31 a.m.
Janie sprints through the snowy yards from two streets away and slips quietly through the front door of her house."
- This tells foreshadows what's going to happen next. It also brings up questions like, "why is Janie sprinting to her house?" Or "Why does she quietly slip into her house?" When I read the first novel this much action wasn't right in the beginning Lisa took an oblivious different approach for Fade.

Unwind
Neal Shutsterman
335 Pages
I picked Unwind because I thought it seemed interesting when I read the summary on the back of the book and I decided to read it
"'There are places you can go,' Ariana tells him, 'and a guy as smart as you has a decent chance of surviving to eighteen'"
When I read that first sentence I was really intrigued to read more because I knew this book was going to be about some adventurous story. I'm a person who is really into adventurous things and when I read that sentence I was super intrigued.

The Runaway King
Jennifer A. Nielsen
Pages 331
I picked this book because it was a New York Times bestseller. I also picked it because it seems like a action book.
"I had arrived early for my own assassination." When I read the first sentence I thought is he gonna die? and did he do something wrong? The first sentence made me really think about what's going on.

John Corey Whaley

I picked this book because it was a national book finalist. "Listen-I was alive once and then I wasn't. " I think from the first sentence that this book is gonna be interesting and a little weird. This guy also seems a little crazy.

Until Friday Night
By Abbi Glines
328 pages
I picked this book because I saw that the author wrote another book that was in the top 10 list but we didn't have it.So I read the inside cover of a different book from the same other and it seemed interesting.
"This wasn't home.Nothing ever would be again. And besides, I didn't want a home.".I was confused when I first started reading but it came to me that he was having family issues at home. The main character is in high school so I could tell that because of his family problems he would try to block out his pain.

More of Me
314 pages
I chose this book because I liked how the front cover looked and I liked the summary of the book on the back cover.
"I have grown in strength inside her, filled her cells with mine until we must split apart."
My reaction to the first line was that it started of weird but hopefully the whole book was like that.

Eleanor & Park
Rainbow Rowell
325 pages
I picked this book because It seemed interesting when I read the summary on the back of the book and felt like something I would enjoy reading.
"XTC was no good for drowning out the morons at the back of the bus, Park pressed his headphones into his ears"
My reaction to the first sentence of the book was kinda relatable because sometimes in the bus it gets a little too loud and I have to turn up the volume to my music.

The Rose Society
Marie Lu
395 pages
I picked this book because I had read Legend and the rest of the trilogy and then my seventh grade teacher recommended that I read this because she knew I had finished the Legend trilogy.
"When I was a little girl, my mother would spend long afternoons telling me old folktales."
My reaction to the first sentence was that Adelina was remembering a flashback from her deceased mother who died of the blood fever. Adelina's mother was kind to her unlike her father but when her mother died her father had no use for her and later on the rest of her friends betrayed her because of her power that only feeds on fear and darkness but it's their fault for her darkened heart and her goal in the book is to get revenge for those who left her behind, and who betrayed her.
