Christos | 219 comments I want to know if there any Sci-fi stories that have similar themes to my story? I would also like to know what people think of the idea. I haven't read any sci-fi novels with a similar story, I got this idea just talking about Elon Musk with friends. I would love to read similar stories for inspiration, if anyone knows of any please share.

I want to write a short story that takes place in a Utopian future where almost all the worlds problems have been solved but the problem is that there is no imagination. In this future anytime someone wants to watch a tv show, read a book or watch a movie they download that piece of media into their brain and consume it in seconds. No one works all jobs are automated including entertainment. If a person has the urge to go skydiving they download the memories of someone who went skydiving. Everyone plays the Piano and guitar the exact same way because they all downloaded the program to learn how to play it perfectly. The only conversations they have is things they've looked up and downloaded into their brains no one has an original thought. People even delete emotions from their mind they don't like such as sadness, boredom and anger so they will only be happy. Even evil people would rather relive memories of someone committing murder instead of killing people themselves. People are doing this all voluntarily this not being forced on them by the government. The main character is trying to find new experiences to inspire people, he must do something extreme and maybe something horrible to change society.

Well, yes there are several similar conceits. But there is no reason that should deter you from writing your story.

Trike | 11219 comments I've read things which are tangentially similar but nothing exactly like that. Brave New World has some similar elements, for instance.

But that's no reason for you not to give your own spin to it. After all, Stephen King has millions of fans and he's just regurgitating Twilight Zone episodes with his own take on them.

Christos | 219 comments No sorry you misunderstood me, I want to read similar stories for inspiration not stop. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I want to make it clear though in this story unlike BNW this way of life is not being forced on anyone if you choose to do things the old fashioned way without implants the government will not punish you they don't care. This world is a Utopia turned into a Dystopia by it's citizens voluntarily

Umm... I'm not so sure that's a good direction to go in.

Christos | 219 comments That's a good point but I have wanted to read BNW before I came up with the idea anyway. Also reading it can have the opposite effect I can see how other people wrote the story so I can avoid copying them intentionally or not
