I'm going to try and start Emperor mage tonight, but like you said I've got other challenges that I need to finish. I'm way behind because I binge watched Once Upon a Time since I bought the first 3 seasons

I'm not much for tv, I prefer my other hobbies more, but I'll find one show I like buy every season I can then watch it. Got my mom into it too :p

- I know we're introduced to quite a few immortals in Daine's books, but I like how the main immortals in The Protector of the Small are different. The spidrens who eat a kitten, then the ones they fight with the King's Own. This is really the first real introduction of spidrens in any of the series, right? They seem so terrifying to me. But I also greatly dislike spiders. I finally killed one by myself in my house the other day without my skin crawling, but it was a close one. Lol
- The series is so aptly named. On this reading, I was thinking, "Oh yeah, she protects the kittens in the beginning of book one, REAL subtle definition of the series title..." But then just everything. She defends herself and other first years from bullying, she defends Lalasa as her maid, the dog Jump, the sparrows, even her horse Peachblossom (although I'm not sure if he can justifiably be considered "small" in stature, but at the very least he can't defend himself and she saves him from the glue factory). But it doesn't feel shoved down our throats forcefully; it all flows so perfectly in the story.
- These books and characters are the best developed of any of the Tortall books I've read. (I can't speak for the Beka Cooper series. Looking forward to that one later!) I love how she develops this crush on Neal. She's so real and relatable! And I'm now at the part where Cleon is starting to show feelings for Kel while she adamantly denies that being the case. I love it! I even love Wyldon! Even being slightly less present than in the first book, he's developed more in this one.

I'll post some more thoughts on the Protector of the Small in a little bit

I love that these books never seem to drag. Every scene feels engaging and important. Although, I did find myself anticipating the big details I remembered. Once again, I'd forgotten SO MANY details! I was anticipating her romantic fling with Cleon, but I'd forgotten most of the last book, Lady Knight. I'd forgotten pretty much all of the major plot points in that book. I guess that will happen when you don't read a book for close to 10 years! I wish we could get more Kel. We find out more about Alanna since she appears in the later books, but there are no "later" books that Kel's! Since Beka Cooper is from the past :( I want to know if she does ever decide to get married and have children, and we just don't get that. Maybe she does remain unmarried and focused on her career, but what happens to her after she's no longer the commander of refugees? I'm assuming the refugees don't remain there forever. That seems like such a temporary solution. At some point people are going to want homes of their own. The war is going to end. I wish we got to see how and what happens after.

but if you guys get a new date for the next book, you can definitely just move it around to either To Read or back to In Progress as you guys start and finish books (or you can create a new thread for each book!) Whatever is easiest for you guys!
I hope you love your books :D
SORRY, I'll be honest and say I completely forgot about this buddy read. Life got the better of me, with some shit going on at home I completely forgot.

Not a problem :) It really was a lot of books! I put Bloodhound on hold to read some other books, but I plan to finish Beka Cooper's story soon!
I'm glad you're liking Beka Cooper's books, she's one of my favorites

I love her dedication, once she catches the scent there's no stopping her.
