Codex | 3400 comments Has this book been published? What is the ISBN/ASIN? The book record you created contains no publishing information—only title and author name. This is no proof that the book exists.

The same goes for this book in the same series.

Esther | 48 comments I'm writing Xerox right now and Barlow will be after that. I've always done it this way because my readers can add the next book in the series so I can promote it correctly and add the cover and so on before release.

A reminder that Goodreads is primarily a book cataloguing endeavour and not about promoting books. As such it is reasonable to catalogue published books rather than books that might only be published: the latter consume resources that may later turn out to be wasted—and result in cluttering the database with invalid entries.

➜ Left for higher authority to decide on.

Esther | 48 comments I've never added a book to Goodreads that I didn't release. Do hope this one can be added since I fully intend to buy and add the cover and blurb within a few weeks for Xerox, book two will follow asap. (Like I've always done and will do, that's mainly the reason my books never get pulled. Because they are solid as soon as I've got them set.)

Krazykiwi | 1767 comments Part of cataloguing includes readers tracking future publications on their to-read shelves, so that they get notifications when the book is published. It's standard practice (both for trad publishers and for indie publishers) to add placeholders for confirmed future books, for this purpose. Especially if it's the author who wants it added

What is problematic is when an author offhandedly mentions "I might write one more book in X series one day" and someone goes and adds those to GR. Because once a book has been listed here, it needs staff intervention to remove entirely if it's been shelved by anyone. This is a very different situation.

An ASIN/ISBN or projected publication date is only required for an authors first book, because without those, they won't be able to claim the profile. Again, not the situation here (although a projected publication date is always nice, it can be changed if the schedule slips).

So yes, it's perfectly fine and normal to add these books. Added Barlow to the series.

I thought that but didn't know how to articulate it.
