John Heyburn Out of the Ashes: Rebuilding American Culture is a combatant tool and weapon for a better understanding in the problems created in American Society and how by both looking back and to impeding future to correct our mistakes that humanity as a whole is creating for themselves. Anthony Esolen goes on to tell of how in all great civilizations, Family was THE key component to their success. The Chinese Dynasties, The Egyptians, Greeks, Nordic, all based important decisions on family. But family meant more than relatives but the whole group as family, united. But one of the best examples of Family unity is the Jewish people. Everything the Jewish people have done and do is centered around family. Enslavement, Exile, Hatred, even the Holocaust have beaten and withered the Jewish people but family always stayed important and their first priority. Anthony goes on to say how the United States has lost the value of family and if we fail to recover it, America will spiral down into despair and impending doom. But he also wants his readers to understand that the biggest family they are part of is mankind. “We must love this world, but we have here no abiding city. The great division is between those who place all their hope in the present life and those who know that we are pilgrims. There is no retreat, but take courage- we have the map.” (Anthony Esolen 73)

Anthony Esolen supports his arguments by using metaphors and scenarios to help the reader understand the problem he is addressing and then explains not only how to solve it but also what ways not to solve it. He treats each problem like a court case and teaches the reader how to defend themselves in such situations but instead of using complex and confusing words he keeps his argument simple and to the point. His tone is that of anger but resilience and inspiration. He is very emotional about the subjects he talks about and shows it through his writing.
