SOLVED. Romance novel psychic connection made when hero about to kill himself. [s]

I have not read the book I am looking for but what I remember about the description is that the hero was about to kill himself when the heroine touches him with her mind to convince him otherwise. He then decides that she is his mate and swears he will find her and keep her. I believe he is part of/leader of an immortal race whereas she lives in normal society.
