Don't confuse sub-editing with editing - a guide

I've noticed in various groups I am a part of an in correspondence with authors that there is some confusion between the roles of a sub-editor and an editor. It seems some are hiring the former and expecting the work of the latter, or are unaware that there is more to editing than just correct spelling.
