YA book about time travel with villain named Tarkian? [s]

Looking for a book series, YA, where a family buys a house & moves. This is no ordinary house, as you can pick up specific objects & travel to different historic events in time. The mother is kidnapped by a brutish caveman & the two sons look for her, The villain in the story is called Tarkian? or something similar to that. He actually wants to buy/own the house b/c of its time travel capabilities & will stop at nothing to get it. The dad in the story is principal at the local school and one of the portals to and from the house is in a locker at this school. I believe the author was a man. If anyone can help identify either this series of books (there were maybe 7 of them) or the author I would appreciate it!
