Emily | 10 comments OPENING SURVEY!

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Leeds, UK

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
I’m excited to finish Code Name Verity! I’m starting the Readathon on pg. 116.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
POPTARTS! Lorelai Gilmore, you are my spirit animal.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
I’m an American living abroad. I read about 50/50 fiction and non-fiction. I accidentally joined 3 book clubs, so now I very rarely get to read anything of my own choosing. Oops!
I’m reading the first hour, but then sadly I have an obligation for the next 8 hours or so. I’ll be super excited to jump back in afterward!

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
I have participated in one readathon before. This time around, I’m making more of an effort to read shorter books. I’ve also resolved to listen to some audio so I can get a little exercise.
Also, I’m going to stick to a social-media check in for 15 minutes every two hours. I got WAY sucked in last time and didn’t read as much as I would like.

Emily | 10 comments 1. What are you reading right now?
Code Name Verity (Code Name Verity, #1) by Elizabeth Wein

2. How many books have you read so far?
Just 98 pages of this one. I had another obligation today, so I've only been reading for 3 hours. Hoping to finish at least this one book by the end though!

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
Finishing this one!

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
I had a big (planned) interruption after the first hour, but since I've gotten back to the readathon it has been relatively easy.

5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
That I'll already sleepy! (It is 1am here, but still there's a lot of nighttime left to push through.

In Hours 23 and 24, I read 71 pages of The Stranger.

In total, I read 396 pages and completed 1 1/2 books.

Emily | 10 comments 1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
Hour 14. Even though I hadn't been reading the whole time, I had still been awake and my eyes were just so dry that I had to take a 2 hour nap.

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a reader engaged for next year?
I saw a lot of people reading Agatha Christie and I think her books would be a great choice. They're short and keep you racing through to find out who dunnit.

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next season?
I prefer posting photos to Litsy, because I keep my Instagram and Facebook private. I know it's possible to post photos to these Goodreads threads, but it's tedious and not how I want to spend my readathon.
The readathon community was great on Litsy, I just wish I could have done more mini-challenge entries on that platform.

4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?
The moderators toughed it out through the blog technical difficulties and it ran smoothly regardless.

5. How many books did you read?
1.5

6. What were the names of the books you read?
Code Name Verity
The Stranger

7. Which book did you enjoy most?
Code Name Verity was one of the most captivating books I've read in awhile. I was pleasantly surprised.

8. Which did you enjoy least?
I didn't have one really.

9. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
I will probably participate again. I need to figure out how to strike the right balance between engaging in social media and reading. Last time, I felt really engaged but I didn't read as much as I would have liked. This time, I read a lot in the time I had available, but I didn't really feel part of the party.

Emily | 10 comments Closing Survey!
1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
I had already decided I was going to sleep as normal, so there wasn't a really daunting hour to push through. I did get frustrated with just how little progress I actually made in my books, just like I do every year.

2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read!
I finished The Thirteenth Tale and started Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?: And Other Questions You Should Have Answers to When You Work in the White House.

3. Which books would you recommend to other Read-a-thoners?
Despite the fact that I didn't read either this year, I always think mysteries and graphic novels make good readathon picks.

4. What’s a really rad thing we could do during the next Read-a-thon that would make you smile?
Maybe it's because I'm not a Twitter user, but I feel like some of the chatting and the support that I loved about my first readathon is missing. I liked the mini-challenge to go cheer for some other readers.
I felt like even when I did comment on someone's post, I could never tell if they were around to chat or reading/sleeping. Maybe if there was a hashtag #readathonbreak or something for those actively looking for a quick back and forth before diving back in.
The other thing that might be fun is to have mini-challenge that was like a scavenger hunt, you had to go from one person to the next in your platform (have one for blogs, one for GR, one for twitter, Litsy, etc) to get the next clue. [The people giving out the clues would have to agree to it ahead of time of course] But it might be a way to spread engagement out to a bunch of different corners of the internet. The organizer could even select random people who had signed up and ask them to participate - it would be a good way for people who are normally readers-only to have a small way to volunteer.

5. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? Would you be interested in volunteering to help organize and prep?
I will do it again whenever time allows, but I'm not sure I can make a commitment to any sort of organizing at the moment.
