MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments My library has this online calculator that helps people calculate how much money they save by using the library.

Now they've started calculating it for you and putting the total on the checkout receipt!

According to my library, I've saved $105 this year. (If they only knew...)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Yeah, I like that, but of course it gives me a ridiculously high number, because I would never buy this many books new.

So, cool new thing my library is doing - putting "golden tickets" in random books, that you bring back and redeem for a prize. Prize is pencil/TootsiePop/bookmark, so I said No thank you, but it was still fun.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments That's fun. I'd like to find a Golden Ticket, so I could sing about it...

I would've loved that as a kid.

Haha.

Just looking at three books I'm currently reading from the library the savings are $45. I shudder to think what this year is already at given 32 library books of the 33 I've read/currently reading.

Do a quick estimate of about $400 this year so far.

I want a Golden Ticket and I WANT IT NOW!

HA!

That's a cool feature though. But, like Cheryl, my number would be off because I hardly ever buy new.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I buy a decent mix. Mostly used but I do buy new as well.

But either way, the amount I spend on books is ...

Hubby gave me some money today - he made it plain I was NOT to buy books or workout clothes. Real clothes/shoes only, he says.

O_O

I thought of you when I saw that. :-D

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I've been on a bit of a workout tank kick lately...

There are only 2 more that I definitely want, though.

So far...

(I've also been on a flannel shirt kick... )

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I like workout jackets. And long black pants.

I really want a jacket that has:

a long waistline
a [decent] hood
thumb holes
full zipper
pockets (zippers on the pockets would be great but not a concern)

I'm on the verge of asking someone to custom make me some because this is apparently a unicorn or something.

ha!

Cheryl (cherylllr) My library bought a bicycle and trailer with wifi for $17,000. It seems like a too small too expensive bookmobile to me. I contacted the news site for more information and haven't heard back. Does this make sense to you?

My library system has one as well. It is not really a bookmobile, more a mobile library card signup station. It's brought out at art festivals and similar events to try to sign up people for library cards who just don't seem to realize the library exists. It's good for reaching people who don't realize that the library also has ebooks and that they can sign up for a library card and download an audiobook to their cell phone without going into a branch. It's not really for checking out books, it's more for finding new library card members. While the money sounds like a lot, many libraries get funding based on membership. So, if they can sign up 50 people who would not have gone into a library every time they take it out, it may be worth it in the long run. :)

I've seen these at events but no bookmobiles at all...

message 17: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok... but $17,000?? If it's not even a bookmobile, it should be even less.

I did reread the article and find out that the Friends of the Library organization paid for it. And so I talked to the Friend at their shop, and found that it's scheduled to be at the Farmer's Market every Saturday this summer. She says she's gotten lots of people asking why it cost so much, and suggested I talk to the person who brings it to the Farmer's Market.

We don't have a bookmobile in Carson City, but there are a few in the more sparsely populated counties of rural Nevada. Those, imo, are valuable.

Jackie (thenightowl) I haven't seen one of those before, but it seems cool. That price is a shocker though. I can see people being drawn in though and possibly getting a library card or at least more information about the library. Non-readers may get intimidated by a bookmobile or dismiss it altogether since they have no use, but they miss out on the other library services. I see how this can draw in both readers and non-readers.

message 19: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Hm. Good point, about other library services than books.
